EXPANSION: Rivalry Heats Up Vancouver 1 & Portland Nil as Whitecaps Wins Coin Toss

Posted by Lenny Laymon Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps rivalry has been going on since the NASL and both clubs are in a bit of war of words lately, However the move to MLS will intensify this already heated rivalry. Here is an article by
Geoffrey C. Arnold, The Oregonian

HOUSTON — The flip of a coin added more intensity to an already heated rivalry between the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Timbers lost the coin flip that determined whether Portland or Vancouver would pick first in Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft, expansion draft or the other player acquisition opportunities.

“You want to win everything, but you make the best of the opportunity,” said Gavin Wilkinson, the Timbers coach and general manager. “We’ll get a quality player either way.”

…..

Wilkinson and Merritt Paulson didn’t know they were participating in the actual coin toss until after the toss revealed the winner. They thought the first toss was a rehearsal for the real thing later during halftime of the game.

“We didn’t know it was actually happening for real. We thought it was a run-through,” Wilkinson said. “When he flipped it, we were expecting to do it again for real. But it was for real.”

Paulson said he was ready for the real thing until he looked up from the ground.

“I looked up and he was shaking the hand of the Vancouver representative,” Paulson said.

The Whitecaps say the win gives them an early advantage over their longtime rivals in the race for supremacy in the Northwest.

“In my opinion and in (Timbers owner) Merritt (Paulson’s) opinion, (the rivalry) moved to a new level today with the coin toss,” said Jeff Mallett, co-owner of the Whitecaps. “And guess what? It’s one-nothing Vancouver.”

Nice to see the cluelessness of their FO. I’m not worried one bit about “supremacy”. It does appear as though Vancouver will be on their way to #2 in front of P*rtscum.

  14. A lot has been said about how loud it is in Qwest field with all those fans but growing up watching games in England, I know that would probably be twice as loud if everyone was involved in the singing/chanting. I can’t wait for the day when they open up the entire stadium and invite Portland or Vancouver to bring their loudest 15,000 fans to the game and start a noise contest between 50,000 Seattle fans and 15,000 from Vancouver/Portland. The Sounders fans have a pride in the environment they have created but no-one has come in with enough fans to try and make themselves louder than us and that will change next year. I can’t wait.

  36. So P*rtland is going to show us an authentic fan base? This means that they will find one thing that they have that is better than others and then use that to prove some un related point. The thing the Scum need is a good history lesson and a reality check. Go ahead and give yourself all the titles you want but the rest of the world earns it. Talking up your own shit is not going to impress except in your piss river town. If you are so great now then why are you the only ones talking about it?

  42. I hope that the 2011 MLS season kicks off at Qwest field with Sounders against Portland on national television. It’s possible that we might sell out the entire (66k) stadium and the atmosphere would be amazing as many thousands of visiting fans would come to the game to see their teams first game. We could give them thousands of seats up in the nosebleeds somewhere and it would create an amazing atmosphere and an amazing kick off for the MLS season.
And then we could beat the crap out of them like we did to the Union in their inaugural game.
and Portland – you can take Zach Scott or Peter Vagenas from us in the draft. They are really good and would do well down there.

  45. Say what, mls? Says:
  46. its all just plastic to me. i dont care if this rivalry extended since NASL/USL prove it on the field not from a friggin coin toss thats not rivalry thats just chance and luck. then 10 years from now maybe you can call it a rivalry. the oldest and true rivalry is dc united vs la galaxy and dc united vs nj energy drinks, been goin on since 96. but with the fag move of mls moving dc united to balitmore there goes one more good thing out the door for mls. like i said its all plastic. btw it was Seattle sounders FC that provoked MLS to start stealing all the good clubs from USL so portland, vancouver, and montreal stop thinking you are the shit in soccer because seattle brought you here. btw portscum you guys still havent fixed your mickey mouse “logo”?
