According to this article on FIFA.com, the Uruguayan Midfielder and Seattle Sounders FC transfer target Alvaro Fernandez has left Chilean club Universidad de Chile ahead of a Copa Libertadores match vs Mexico’s CD Guadalajara”

Games of the week
Guadalajara-Universidad de Chile
Estadio Azteca, Tuesday 27 July, 20.15 (local time)

Entering the tournament at the knockout stage, the Mexicans have done well to progress this far, with five first-teamers missing their last-16 and quarter-final engagements due to international commitments. Now back to full strength, Chivas are in optimistic mood despite the fact they will be running out at the Azteca, the home ground of deadly rivals America.

The furthest La U have ever got before was the semi-finals in 1970 and 1996. Hampered by the post-South Africa 2010 departures of midfield duo Alvaro Fernandez and Marco Estrada, the Chileans will nevertheless be holding on to their Argentinian attacking midfielder Walter Montillo until the end of the competition, good news for coach Gerardo Pelusso, who guided Nacional of Uruguay to the last four in 2009.

Furthermore, Fernandez’s Wikipedia page has been updated to include a loan to Seattle Sounders FC.

Fernandez is thought to have arrived in the emerald city yesterday, though no signs of him have been seen near the training ground yet.

Alvaro Fernandez, described as a “speedy, right-sided attacking midfielder” is thought to be a direct replacement for departing Sounder, Freddie Ljungberg, Fernandez made four appearances for Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with Uruguay finishing in 4th place.

  4. I like how he is only 24. We can watch him achieve through his prime if we keep him around.

  6. A nice pick up by Seattle. They seem to be getting hot at the right time and this will only help even more.

  8. I would love to see Freddie play center mid next to alonso, with Fernandez now on the outside. But if Freddie must go, hopefuly he gets to go to EPL side and not another MLS team.

  10. Citing wikipedia is hilarious. For a while Conor Casey’s page listed him as a “total tool” so I guess there is some validity to the website.

  12. I actually think Freddie might be staying in Seattle, just getting a few weeks off to see what’s out there. I would like to see a MF of Zakuani-Alonso-Ljungberg-Fernandez and I don’t think it’s out of the question. If he was going to leave he would have left by now. He being FL10

  14. He will know in a few days according to his agent. 6 teams interested. 1 MLS, 5 international (1 English, 1 Italian, 3 unknowns). He is gone. He wants a contract and there is apparently a lot of tension about his attitude on and off the field with management and players

  16. Does a player count against the cap if he is “loaned” to you ?
Wish Freddie L was staying but there is clearly something going on behind the scenes or he’d be practicing with the team. I would love to have heard how a discussion about a contract extension turned into a heated argument that would cause the Sounders to effectively ban him from the practice field and being around the other players. Crazy stuff.

  18. Did all this Freddie drama start with an argument over a contract extension? I never heard that piece of the puzzle.

  22. for the sake of conversation……
Freddie Ljungberg has no need for urgency in negotiating his move – right ? He is currently being paid to do nothing and if he were to move to a European team, their window doesn’t close until 8/31. It’s in his interest to take his time and get the best deal he can.
The Sounders are in a dilemna because they cannot add players or payroll without losing someone first. It would appear – from reading all the news – that the Sounders are sort of banking on losing Freddie L and his salary and may possibly have a player or two who they can sign once he is gone. However, If Freddie takes until 8/31, we will be screwed.
All this makes me wonder why we wouldn’t be also trying to unload Marshall, Noonan, Vagenas and possibly Jaqua to try and free up some cap room and improve the squad ? Is it that no-one wants them or is it that Sigi wants to keep them because he thinks they are good ?
I know we are going to read about how we can’t make a move until Freddie decides but we have plenty of other players I would be happy to lose – before Ljungberg.

  24. These are the kind of transfers I like to hear about. He is a player who can add obvious value to the team and improve the quality of those around him. Plus, he is on the correct side of his “prime years” so he could potentially add a lot of value to the team for years to come.

I would like to add that I would like to see a scale down of players over 32 from Europe brought into the league. I only say scale down, because in many cases many of these players still have between 3-4 years of on field value plus the marketing and player development is really great. Imagine you are in the NYRB youth development side and at 16 you are getting private lessons from Henry, this will not only help your confidence but also give you an inside advantage that few people in the world have. So, in short, saying that you no longer want this league seen as a “retirement” league is somewhat ludacris because we will always need the veteran players from Europe, if only in a much more limited sense.
