VIDEO: Justin Braun’s Mom Removed From Rio Tinto Stadium

Posted by mlsrumors Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 10:40 am

The above picture and following video are of a bizarrre incident which allegedly took place between a woman who is purportedly the mother of CD Chivas USA striker Justin Braun dressed in Chivas USA colors and some Real Salt Lake supporters at RSL’s Rio Tinto Stadium, affectionately known as “The RioT”. We received them along with the email below:

At the ReAL Salt Lake vs Chivas USA match on Saturday, Chivas’ Justin Braun’s (Salt Lake City native) mom was forcibly from the stadium after throwing a tantrum. She had confetti thrown at her and then got into a yelling match with some of the RSL supporters groups. Security was called in and that is when the tantrum ensued. From my vantage point she looked like a 4 year old being dragged from the playground by their parents. I wasn’t close enough to hear what was being said, I only heard what happened after the game. I have attached video and a photo of the incident. Please don’t publish my name or where you go the info, if you do choose to post it. Love the website, keep up the great work.

Justin Braun seems to confirm the fact that an incident DID take place between RSL supporters and his mom via this tweet on twitter:

Way to have some class fans of salt lake!!!.throwing and yelling shit at my mom, thought you guys were better then that, its pretty pathetic 10:48 AM Jul 25th via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Braun who is originally from Salt Lake City, played the full 90 in Chivas’s 1-1 draw away to Real Salt Lake. Rio Tinto Stadium has gained a reputation for being a tough place for visiting teams to play. The crowd is loud and boisterous and 2009 MLS Cup Champions Real Salt Lake currently are on a 19 match home unbeaten streak dating back to May of 2009.

Regarding the incident itself, we have no idea what lead to this incident. RSL supporters while loud during games seem to be well balanced and intelligent. The ones we hung out with at MLS Cup 2009 did not seem given to boorish behaviour unless they were provoked.

If you were at the game and witnessed the incident feel free to respond in the comments below and tell us what you saw. You may also send us any further pictures or video.

  10. First of all, how are the fans supposed to know this was Brauns mother? Secondly, if you have a field pass you are not supposed to wear either teams jerseys, hats, scarves…. The fans would give anyone a hard time that was wearing Chivas (especially Chivas!) colors. From what I heard she was the one that egged them on. If anyone knows about passionate soccer supporters groups, they would know that perhaps they should not walk right in front of the other teams supporter group sections wearing the opposing teams colors! Any of us that have been to an away game know this and we also know what to expect if we get into this situation.

  20. I have talked with several people involved and everyone has said she was drinking (forbidden on the pitch), clearly wearing a jersey (forbidden on the pitch), and she got upset when the fans made fun of her son and she confronted them. So sorry she was wrong on may points, my question is what in the hell is a grown woman acting like this for and why was she given access to the pitch during the match. She wasn’t in the stands, if she was there to take pictures then the same rules that apply to all photographers should have applied to her.

Sorry Justin, your mom was the classless one and from what I hear she normally is a very nice woman, but blaming the RSL fans isn’t going to excuse what is clearly bad behavior by your mom.

  24. What’s the big deal? She’s a passionate fan of Chivas USA, and RSL has passionate fans. Fans get tossed out of matches all of the time. Parents of players (even alleged parents) ought not be held to a different standard than other fans.

  26. Bones, you can only digress if you’ve made some point and are veering off onto another point. If you stated that your ex-gf’s mon was a psychopath then stated that she had usually large earlobes, the latter point would be a digression. And yes, I am an English prof. Aside from that, lady’s got some hot legs and should’ve engaged the taunting crowd in some ferocious chin to chin action reminiscent of the dirty play that some teams like RSL are known for.

  27. Soccer Fan Says:
  28. Apparently because someone has on a jersey from the opposing team and had a drink or two, it’s ok to insult them and throw confetti at them? This lady was sticking up for her son when someone probably took heckling him too far. I don’t blame her. And also, she does not look wasted in the video. I remember being at Giants Stadium for a weekend crowd announced in the dozens when DC United played New York Red Bulls a couple of years ago. I was wearing a DC shirt and khaki shorts. I’m grabbing a soda in the concourse and a member of one of the NY supporter groups throws a shoulder into me and says, “F#@% You DC!” I’m not even a member of a supporter’s group. I just enjoy watching soccer and being a fan. It was eye-opening. This wasn’t the Washington Redskins vs. the New York Giants, or Rangers vs. Celtic…this was an MLS regular season game with very few people in attendance and a crappy atmosphere. Casual fan beware.

I’m sure the atmosphere at RSL is different since Rio Tinto is an awesome stadium, and the team regularly fills the seats. And in all fairness I bet that Red Bull Arena is an awesome gameday experience. The point that I am getting at is that too often, the MLS experience is incompatible with fans who aren’t die-hard supporter’s group members. The problem that I have is that I would bet, even without knowing the situation, that some crazy fans treated Braun’s mom like absolute crap. She’s at a game trying to watch and support her kid, and the supporter’s group probably took it upon themselves to spew negativity.

  30. Soccer Fan,

You miss the point. She was using a field pass issued to be on the sidelines, I can tell you that MLS doesn’t allow people on the sidelines taking pictures (her reason for having a pass) to wear jerseys. They do not allow you to drink. This wasn’t a fan in the stands. This was a person who was given field access to take pictures, at that point you play by different rules. When is the last time a photographer turned around and started engaging the fans who paid for their seats?

Sorry you are just wrong, they didn’t know who she was until she started in on them. But she broke several of the rules of being on the sidelines and pretending to be a photographer, just because she knows someone on the pitch doesn’t mean that the rules don’t apply to her. If I showed up in San Jose, or Seattle drinking and wearing a RSL jersey I would be asked to leave the sidelines. She broke the rules, then got silly in trying to argue with fans, who threw confetti on her (scraps of paper) and she went into a tizzy. Security didn’t remove fans, they removed her as she was the root of the issue.

  40. Yeah, I was fortunate enough to be down on the field when this was going down (I’m the one laughing at her in that picture). For the record…

She was walking around in a Chivas shirt (I didn’t know she was Braun’s mom, heard that after the first half of the incident; all I knew is she was some lady in the wrong colors) in front of our section and someone shot a confetti popper in her direction. She ran over to security, screaming that she’d been assaulted and trying to get them to throw out/arrest people in our section. Most of sections 9, 10, and 11 started saying some unkind things about her at this point. Eventually, security got her to leave. Then she came back with cops and security in tow and started pointing at a whole bunch of random people–even some who hadn’t been chanting–telling the police to arrest them, got up in a fan’s face to scream at him, and hit one of the guys in the front row. At this point security finally stepped in, grabbed her underneath the arms, and carried/dragged her out.

Sucks to be her, but she was wearing away team colors on the side of the pitch, she was drunk and belligerent, she freaked the fuck out about some scraps of paper, and then she basically tried to get in a fight with the entire South End. It’s her own damn fault, and Justin Braun and his Twitter complaints can suck a dick.

  48. For all of the people posting who say she was minding her business, I regret to inform you that you are wrong.

We did not know she was Justin Braun’s mother. She came walking through the supporter’s section popping her Chivas jersey and taunting the fans. My friend popped some confetti and she immediately starting screaming assault.

Paper confetti, cannot hurt a human being. It’s not like we poured beer on her.

As a player’s mother, she should know that you don’t go to the supporter’s section, of all places, and start taunting the fans. By doing this, she is looking for trouble. When she got covered in confetti, she could have just walked on and the situation would have been over. Instead, she escalated matters by crying “assault” by confetti. This is when the fans began to chant and say things to her. Because she was throwing a fit over confetti.

When I was talking to security, they informed me she was being removed because they received several complaints from around the stadium that she was causing trouble. This was not an isolated incident.

She got what she deserved. I will defend my team no matter what. I live and die Real Salt Lake. It seems silly to me that someone would go so crazy over pieces of paper.

    And that chick was drunk!
