“Sources tells MLSR that USL is pitching its new I-League (Indoor League) to MLS as a way for under contract MLS players to stay in game shape between seasons. USL announced the formation of the I-League this week in Rochester. No word yet on whether MLS would entertain the idea of letting its under contract players play indoor during the closed season.”

An indoor league? This is the stupidest idea USL has had yet. Indoor football looks nice at first but is real crap. Playing between walls and on concrete floor, there’s a recipe to hurt a player’s health on the pitch…

GIJane, I hate that idea too. Indoor soccer is human ping pong; it is a gimmick (i.e. Arena Football). Indoor soccer was popular in the mid to late 80’s but it doesn’t work in the modern era. Garber would not entertain that idea.

People would watch this? I can see it being good for those minimum contract guys, but going to my local indoor stadium to get to see Brandon Barklage’s team play against Luke Sassano’s.

I love playing indoor, but not keen on it coming out as a professional league again. Visions of the NASL teams playing indoor back in the 80s. ugh.

Why would the MLS brass announce a position on whether it would let its players play in an offseason indoor league that has one team, no coaches, no front offices, and no players?
The position will be “no”, of course.

Actually, it might be “hell no”, “f*** no”, or “you can’t possibly be serious, can you?”.

UHHH HELL NO!!

Wow, you people sure can BIT*H. “Oh indoor sucks, oh it’s from the 80’s, oh I wouldn’t watch this.” SHUTUP. If MLS are allowed to play here during their offseason, this would be a HUGE leap in the right direction towards making the MLS a better footballing league. Instead of going through 10 weeks of messy soccer for the first 10 weeks of the season because all the players spent their offseasons not touching a ball. This is especially great because indoor is quick and defensive pressure comes fast, just like in the MLS. Plus is arguably more physically demanding than a full size game. This would be FANTASTIC to have MLS players stay in shape during the offseason and the reserve players stay in form if they’re not getting time with the first team.

Can’t MLS just start a pub league?

@ Roy
I agree but have one problem, the quick transition between grass pitch play and concrete play. Also indoor play and outdoor play are two totaly different things this can really throw a players game out of whack. This can do more harm to our already mediocre league. i think a schedule change would do better

This is a horrible idea!
a) Indoor soccer is the exact opposite direction Americans should be going if they want to become better soccer players. This is because indoor soccer does not require any skill. It’s more likely to take skill AWAY from players. Body checking and blasting soccer balls off a wall won’t help improve the American soccer style of play much either.
b) Instead of playing indoor soccer, American should be playing futsal (A.K.A. the sport that all great and famous players overseas played as they grew up.) Futsal helps you with ball control, foot skills and passing the ball in tight spaces.

um…there are many pro indoor soccer leagues in the US right now. You have the MISL and PASL. there are a few former MLS players play play in the USL and in the MISL. Some of these guys get pretty good money in indoor as well. Jamar Beasley whom signed with KC wizards was playing indoor exclusively for a few years now and made more money there than he is in MLS.
Even Jimmy Conrad said MLS should buy the MISL and have the league minimum guys and players that didn’t play a minimum amount of minutes to be allowed to play to keep fitness up.
Pro indoor is pretty great and ive been into it since 2004.

Capt Chaos, you pretty much summed it up. If you want to watch indoor soccer, go see your local team that is in the MISL/PASL. As it is, big name players go overseas on loan once the MLS season is over. Like baseball, they have the Arizona Fall League and the NFL used to have NFL Europe, MLS should have a fall league either in Florida/Arizona/Nevada for league minimum players they are currently on a MLS roster that don’t play during the regular season. As for indoor soccer idea with the MLS…NO THANK YOU!! Outdoor soccer fans are not keen with dealing with a sport that has fiber glass, concrete floor and boards.

Seems like a desperate move by USL. This is the end of this USL train wreck as we know it.
NASL will be the 2nd division in 2011 and USL will be the 3rd and 4th division in the USSF pyramid.

a HUGE step backwards! whats next USL Beach Soccer league?
(Report comment)
I dont get the USL. Instead of starting a futsal or even a beach soccer league theyre heading in the wrong direction by starting up indoor soccer? No wonder the NASL teams wanted out of that third-rate league.

Indoor soccer is legit and I love it. Just not sure about the MLS in it like the old NASL. I did love the MISL, NPSL leagues and they are great to watch. Playing indoor is more fun for me really. But what is good about indoor is that players get better touch for the ball. It’s faster and better footwork. Also, it’ll get you in shape for sure. Something you shouldn’t whine about if you haven’t ever done it or watched. To be honest, it’s more fun to watch than outdoor footy.

Seems to me the MLS should focus more on getting our players loaned to overseas teams with winter leagues for advanced playing time and experience. An indoor, futsal, or beach league would be a step in the wrong direction. Look at LD10’s vast improvement after his Everton time. Now think of several dozen MLS players getting time abroad during the off-season, and think of the caliber MLS could get to.
