INCOMING: Matias Abelairas to Seattle Sounders FC on Loan?

Posted by mlsrumors Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Could the 25 year old Argentine Left Winger be headed to the Emerald City? Perhaps.

Reports on Argentina’s Radio la Red state that the player has an offer from a club in Mexico that is nothing special and that his agents may approach the Sounders to take Abelarias on loan. Last year the Sounders expressed interest in the midfielder having seen him on a pre season training tour of Argentina. The Sounders trained at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental and fell to River 1-0 in a friendly.

Abelairas is a free kick specialist as well. He’s been in and out of River’s starting eleven and River Plate’s coach Angel Cappa has stated that Abelarias may no longer be in his plans. Matias Abelarias earns a salary which may be more than River can afford at the moment.

Abelarias has won a title at River. In 89 games he has scored 11 goals.

Here’s video of Matias “El Pitu” Abelairas in action:

  2. Yes please! It sure would be nice to have someone on the roster who is adept at corner kicks and free kicks.

  8. Roy, you may want to consider some different websites if you don’t want to hear about MLS transfer rumors.

  10. CSD, LOL.

It’s an interesting thought. Does anyone else get the impression that South American agents are using the MLS as a negotiating tactic?

  12. This guy sucks. He plays on my team (River Plate) and all the fans hates him.

BTW, maybe he can do it well in MLS.

One thing: his salary in River is U$S 250,000. Can Sounders pay this?

  14. I think we’ve still go room under the cap, but I can’t see us paying it for a left winger.

Steve Zakuani has been arguable our best player this season out on the left-wing. I’d bet if we’re gonna drop that kind of salary we’ll be looking for another position.

  16. Yeah if he is a left-winger, that wont happen without a move of position. I think the fans would be mad if they replaced Zak. He is becoming more of a fan fave and is too explosive to replace.
