We’re going to be completely honest with you. We do not know what to make of all the rumors surrounding a resurrected New York Cosmos. If you have been an avid reader of MLSR you no doubt saw the story about Paul Kemsley buying the Cosmos name, trademark, etc from long time holder Peppe Pinton.
Those early reports stated that Kemsley was going to put a barnstorming team ala the Harlem Globetrotters. Shep Messing seems to think otherwise and you’d think he would know, having been right on several MLS expansion rumors in the past and having been part of the New York Cosmos. Messing alleges that the new Cosmos may have some sort of impact on MLS, he stopped short of saying they would be an expansion team, just that they’d have some affect on MLS.
One thing is certain, The Borough Boys are all excited. And long time MLSR readers know we back their efforts for an MLS club in New York City proper. They even have this petition to bring back the Cosmos and have them play in MLS.
The photos below appeared on a British art and lifestyle blog called Hot 110. It would appear an artist was hired to paint the New York Cosmos logo on a brick wall in the new, yet secret headquarters of the new New York Cosmos. Since this is the first tangible physical proof of a Cosmos return we pass it on to you to ascertain what it all means. Have any ideas? Know where the headquarters is? This would be wonderful except for the fact that there is no stadium. If that means that they would have to share NYRB Arena, then EVERYONE should say NO F-ING THANKS! Everyone’s broke so I don’t know where they’ll get the funds or even the land for a second SSS in NY. Do the Borough Boys have any ideas? MetOval?

The RB corporation is not dumb enough to let someone play in their stadium. The stadium that they financed fully. Especially when that would be them supporting the competition. I don’t care if they’d be paying RB rent or not.

Ok first off the whole reason people are advocating for new York cosmos football club is beccause they want a club in new York proper ( queens) not to have a second club in new jersey. That would be a waste of funds, development and time. Jmg is right rb would not share a private funded/owned stadium. Second off I don’t think it would hard to place a club in new York I mean queens is Big place to build a stadium and easy to get to from all over new York. Plus there a lot of rich soccer supporters like bloomberg, pele might get involved If the cosmos name stick. Then again I wouldn’t be surprised if red balls tries to put a end to this project for fear of losing all theyr new yorker fans. I prsonally support the movement I would love a club in NYC and not in stinky jersey.
It’s a perfect new York/jersey rivalry. I think mls will make it happen if the Montreal ( bleh!) deal falls which I hope.

Hell if rbny signs thierry Henry and puts owning a mls club in the contract I wil bet he will go for new York. Even if he doesn’t get signed I’m sur he’ll strongly support the movement

AEG doesn’t seem to mind renting out the HDC to Chivas USA. I think they know a bit more about the sports and entertainment business than you do.

Uhhhhhh, veryyyy highly unlikely that RBNY would let a rival club play in the stadium that they fully financed. Would be very stupid and I’d be absolutely stunned to see that. Not to mention it would totally defeat the purpose of a Cosmos resurrection because people want the team in Queens anyway.

And this is why i dont understand why RB’s would name the team NY when they play in Jersey and a NY team is def going to be in the league. So we’re going to have a derby of NY teams when one plays in Jersey?..What a joke!!…Im from Jersey and i always wanted the team to be called NJ considering that 80% of the fans are from Jersey. The stadium has the Newark skyline not NY!! Wish we could take the Cosmos name but i’ll settle for “NJ” RB’s

Who cares? Put the team in NYC and the Cosmos will be something special. It doesn’t need to be in Queens, Brooklyn or whatever specific borough some “non-owner” is claiming. It just needs to be in a NYC-accessible place.

It would be pretty cool if Becks brings in the cosmos. i dont think the red bulls will fold tho. i dont know if NY has space foa a new stadium do they? why not a joined RB and Cosmos at red bull staium?

lolz, the difference between AEG and RB is the fact that at one point AEG owned the majority of the teams in the league to begin with. So their interest in letting Chivas use the HD was to the advantage of the entire league at that time. Not too mention there were only a couple of SSS around. RB will not let another team come in their stadium.

I think the Cosmos would help the league and Red Bull the most. The Borough Boys would be a perfect rival for the SOB’s, as they like us started before the team. The Union, Red Bull, Cosmos, United & Rev’s would form another rivalry as teams would now get more away supporters to crank up interest in MLS. This to me is what we need and there is no doubt that Red Bull needs to step up this year to create a winning team. I look forward to seeing the Arena this year as it will become the standard for stadiums in the future for all teams.

Fold the Red Bulls, Bring the cosmos to the New Stadium in Jersey or just tell Red Bull that the name is stupid and rename to the Cosmos.
