REPORT: NASL 2012 Expansion?

Posted by Lenny Laymon Friday, January 29th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

This came to us from a source that has supplied us with reliable information in the past. Here is what they emailed us:
“I hear that NASL is looking at several markets in the Southwest without MLS for the next round of expansion. The criteria would be a good Mexican-American oriented fanbase that follow FMF clubs. San Diego, Phoenix and San Antonio are the three strongest possibilities, although I hear only two of those will be picked. Pachuca has had preliminary discussions with the NASL about coming on board as a partner. No word on whether they would be involved in one of those cities or somewhere else. The NASL is looking at 2012 for this round of expansion.”

NASL hasn’t even started it’s first year and is looking for new cities to expand the league and replace Vancouver in 2012. The ownership group is very well funded and is definitely taking a long term approach to the new league. If our source is right and this one usually is then NASL is looking to fill the void in regions and metropolitan areas MLS has no presence.

What other cities do you think they should look at?

They are expected to build a new soccer stadium with about 35,000 seats.

  18. San Diego is all but a lock. The San Diego Flash (formerly of USL1) have reformed under new ownership and are going to be playing an exhibition season in 2010. They have a stated goal of rejoining D2 league play in 2011, and with USL’s demise at the D2 level all but certain NASL is the only league that makes sense.

  26. Atlanta’s already in for 2011. Pachuca was looking at Pheonix a year or two ago. There has been preliminary talk about Edmonton coming in 2011 or’12. One version of the Edmonton story is that they would be, esentially, the White Caps reserve squad. A high-level reserve squad which would further point to how serious Vancouver is about becoming a respected FC worldwide in coming years. There was also a story a few months ago about both the USL and TOA/NASL approaching parties in Oklahoma City and Norman about establishing a team in OK. Apparently they consistantly pull down respectible sized crowds for MLS pre-season games and any other pro-games they can get there.

Just get sound pro soccer in every part of the country. I’m Fire ‘Til I Die, but I want this nation to have pro teams from sea to sining sea.

Who in their right mind would sign for them and play in that heat?

    Ridiculous place for a team.

  32. Albuquerque, it has a huge Mexican community and no pro teams… do it…. If MLS was smart they would get into serious talks to Ussf D2 to occupy all regions that MLS does not currently and than MLS should buy USSF D2 and MLS should expand to 32 teams……

  38. Here is a list of several cities that might make a good home to an expansion NASL football club. To be fair, I’ve listed cities from varying regions across the continent, not just the southwest:

    Phoenoix, Ariz
    Las Vegas, Nev
    New Orléans, La
New York City, NY (If USL-1 FC New York can’t get themselves off
    the ground)
    San Antonio, Texas
Detroit, Mich (If future MLS expansion falls through)
Cleveland or Cincinnati, Ohio (Maybe both)
San Francisco or San Diego, Calif (To expand the geographic base)
Calgary, Alb, Winnipeg, Man, and/or Ottawa, Ont
(If the rumours of the NASL coming to Edmonton, Alb
    are to be believed)

I am a supporter of both DC United and Crystal Palace Baltimore, but I do agree with Steve the Arsonist. We should DEFINITELY have football clubs “from sea to shining sea.”

  42. Omaha would be a fantastic addition! Morrison stadium seats over 5K and it is in the middle of downtown Omaha near Creighton University. No need for a new stadium.

FC Omaha. Omaha City. AC Omaha. There is a significant Czech community…perhaps …. Sparta Omaha ?

  43. Patrick In San Jose Says:
  44. San Francisco! The team could play at Kezar, yeah? If it wasn’t for the fans of San Francisco, the Quakes Ultras wouldn’t exist. They got passion in SF and deserve a team!

  45. Kevin Says:
  46. MLS or NASL should move quickly on these untapped markets: San Deigo, Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, El Paso, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and even McAllen. All of these areas will have a population exceeding a million very soon if not already. They also have a large hispanic base. You need to expand the leagues in order to capture all of the talent before they are discovered by the big european clubs.

Please. I live in that town, and the Mustangs couldn’t survive 2 seasons in the old A-League. Poor attendance and a town so focused on the Flames and the Canadian gridiron, it’s a recipe for disaster if they return — UNLESS there is strong backing AND they market the hell out of it!

  68. If The NASL expands in 2012 and to all the parts of the country where MLS is not. Then MAYBEE EVENTUALLY we will SEE a TRUE promotion/Relagation in this country!

For the NASL they also need to SELL NAMING RIGHTS to the DIVISIONS as they do in England, Fransisco Marcos was too busey calling HIS leagues by stupid names like the sizzlin nine and so forth. SELL NAMING RIGHTS
this will just add more money to the League for whatever it needs, ALSO all NEW teams in OLD NASL Citys should GO BY the OLD NASL NAMe!

Not Pachucia USA or Chiva USA or Crystal Palace Baltimore!!!!!
Chivas should be LOS ANGELS CHIVAS!(or Goats) And Baltimore should be BALTIMORE CPFC!
