USL: A few tidbits from today’s conference call…

Posted by Nate Scadlock Thursday, January 7th, 2010 at 7:46 pm

- Yes, Gulati very briefly mentioned pro/reg as he began to lose focus during a thought about the future of USL/NASL. Then as previously mentioned he quickly stated “I don’t want to light up any blogs” and moved on to the next subject. He was very clear that this meeting was about 2010 and not the future.

- Contrary to rumors a few days ago it will be one league with inter league play, just USL and NASL conferences.

- They seemed very disinterested in the name of the league saying that it will likely called the USSF D2 league for now. Also stated that this league is a temporary solution for 2010 and that a more permanent name will be part of the future, not this quick fix. They did mention that a corporate partner could lead to a name for the league.

- There will be two divisions in this USSF D2 league; USL=Austin, Minnesota, Portland, Puerto Rico, Rochester and Tampa Bay. NASL=Baltimore, Carolina, Miami, Montreal, St. Louis and Vancouver.

- Atlanta and New York are not out of the running to be in the league, but they are part of the plans for 2011. Atlanta was planning 2011 all along and New York was out of the 2010 early in the process.

- They may schedule lighter during the initial World Cup stages, but don’t plan on taking “5 weeks or 31 days off” of their regular schedule for the event.

- USSF will be running the logistics of the league during the 2010 season which is referring to scheduling, officiating, and any needed discipline.

- There were other things talked about, but my quality of feed was somewhat of a roller-coaster.

- We were told that the conversation in whole would be posted later on USsoccer.com

  6. Kyle,
In an ideal scenario, Philadelphia gets dropped? Nowak will be so upset.

I said (something like this). 20+ teams, who battles for promotion or against relegation each year, would be fantastic. They will be eventually 20-something teams in MLS why not introduce prom/rel?
It’s the same teams either way

  10. The max teams per league is 20. I am pretty sure MLS said a while back maybe some day 24, but that’s nonsense talk. I would like a 20 team MLS, 20 team NASL and in 30 years or so a 20 team 3rd division. By then there should be enough money in soccer that 60 markets could support teams of reasonable size.

  12. Promotion and relegation would work great. But with such limitations on clubs to invest in their own clubs for talent. (dont want to say it but……yes the extremely LOW SALARY CAP) You cant limit a clubs expansion of talent and then threaten with relegation for them having a poor season. Sorry for bringing up this old argument, but from my perspective you cannot have promotion/relegation with such extensive limitations.

I said that it’s, give or take, what I put out there. Maybe NE Rev should be D2, who gives a f*ck. What i’m trying to say is that MLS should allow something like 20, 24, 26,….teams (all paid the expansion fee) and then introduce prom/rel, so that there’s some sort of competition for bottom teams like NYRB.

  24. For sure the MLS will have plus 20 teams, i say 24. But i dont get it, so there will be two divisions in MLS and not a MLS-2 or MLS-3. So it will be like the NFL and MLB. So the east and west will become like National and American or in MLS-1 will be MLS 1a and 2b. Whats going on!!!!!! I Say have MLS-1 MLS-2 and have 22 teams in each and of course add promotion and relagation in 5 or 8 years. Isnt this what Jimmy Conrad or whatever his name is from Kansas City wizards said, ” to have to divisions in MLS” right…………..

  27. Carson 08 Says:
  28. It’s the thought that counts. Yes it’s too many teams at the moment BUT this is for future reference. I like the vision of what you said Kyle, even if you put the Crew in D.2, but I think it’s going to take 5 years before we look at both of these leagues operating together. There is too much pride in the lower divisions at the moment to accept defeat to the MLS being #1 in this country. And the MLS needs more corporate and television support to raise the cap, buy better players, and fund a risk in the lower division.

A great run in the world cup this summer would be VERY beneficial. Donovan was class against Arsenal today. We need more players of his talent to compete.

  29. lolla Says:
  30. The problem is if you get home grown talent you wont compete you will lose them to teams accross the pond! SO until owners of the MLS can pay these guys what the get paid overseas you will just be watching them on GOL TV or Fox Soccer channel!
