Posted by David Gubala Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Many of our sources have indicated that former Mexican International and El Salvador coach, Carlos De los Cobos, is currently in talks with Fire’s technical director, Frank Klopas. De los Cobos, 51, has led El Salvador to its first ever final round of World Cup Qualifying. This team gave everyone headaches. It has been referred to as one of the best El Salvadorian teams in history.

Although you probably have heard of over ten names considering to take the job, this man is most likely finish off all the rumors and suspense. This deal can be done as early as this Friday. De los Cobos has also announced that he will not be returning to international coaching come 2010, but is rather looking out for a club to manage.

Coaching Possibilities
Carlos De los Cobos – 80%
Tom Soehn – 40%
Jesse Marsch – 40%
Eric Wynalda – 30%
Brian McBride (Player-Coach) – 10%

What? El Salvador has been to two World Cups, so I’m pretty sure they’ve made the final round of qualifying before.

I had to look it up but if you’re referring to the Hexagonal, which started in 98, they reached it that same year.

  8. This looks like a big win for Fire fans…BUT, he HAS been a national team coach before, so you have to wonder how long he’d stick around in MLS if another Central/South American federation came calling.

    B-Mac as player/coach…that’s pretty far-fetched, but it’d be interesting!

  10. “1st ever final round”??? wtf…El Salvador has reached 2 world cups, reached the final round moren than a handfule, back in early 90s was the one prior to this recent one.Its best team was the one that reached Spain ‘82.
De Los Cobos is a great coach. He picked up that national team. He did it with a horrendous national league, and no I’m not hating. I am from El Salvador and the league is horrible. Not only a great coach, but a great person.
I’m a Galaxy fan, but I hope Chicago gets him.
