INCOMING: Inter Milan’s Patrick Vieira to MLS?

Posted by Patrick Beatty Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 at 10:46 am

This man is yelling it from the tops of the hills, he is interested in MLS!

ESPN Soccernet (click here for the original article and all the details) is reporting that the 33 year old holding midfielder told France’s Orange Sport:

“I still have a year left on my contract and I think it will be my last in Europe at the highest level. I would like to try an experience in the United States, [former French international] Youri Djorkaeff has convinced me.”

“What interests me could really be a life experience, and to go and discover football in the United States, if I was to continue playing”

What do you think? Excited that Vieira could be coming to MLS or do you think he would be a bust? If he comes, where will he end up? Could we see him with the New York Red Bulls or could another team use him better? With rumors of Shevchenko, Henry, Marquez, and others coming to MLS, will this be a good or bad thing for soccer in the US and/or MLS? Encouraged that the infulx of DP players is causing a network of their friends to become interested in MLS or would you prefer cheaper young (homegrown or not?) talent that may one day be superstars?

  2. I like all the rumors, but I think a lot of these guys just use us to gain leverage in their own negotiations. It’s also necessary to sell the DP on the city before they’ll come.

Hanauer and Keller taking Ljungberg around Seattle was just as important as selling him on the league.

  4. i agree. all these guys are good but i think europe is seeing us as their dumpster. not that these guys are not good but theyr old and spent and they just toss em here, or they come to get a good check and just jog around the pitch. i would love for viera and marquez and shevshenko but the way i see it, if we dont change the CBA to make it interested for young talent to stay and big names to come then we’ll still be a retirement home for fomer big stars.

  8. i agree with sammysounder because this league is seen as a minor league to help a falling stars career, but i would be excited to see marquez and henry in the league, but more homegrown talent such as sacha Kljestan and brian ching are important

  12. MLS has yet, to this date, really pushed the envelope on player signings. They do not compete for the top players and they most likely NEVER WILL. Why? Cause the owners have seen the light, put the cheapest product on the field and reap the benefits of the low cost players. Oh sure, they put a spattering of aging “known” stars on teams, but really, are these teams looking to out do the next team? Does MLS really compete with the Mexican league? Do we go after more trophies than just MLS CUP? Not really… not by a long shot.

  14. Somewhere out there is a point of balance. These big name signings are certainly good for the league, up to a point. Yeah, these guys certainly put some butts in seats, but they also (usually) make the players around them better and more experienced. How is it not good for young American players to play alongside, and against, the likes of Blanco, Lundberg, Beckham, and Angel? That said, one or two of these guys per squad can only do so much to up the level of play.
The most important thing the league bosses can do is push, seriously, to develop the leagues academy system. THAT is where the real talent upon which to build MLS, and the USMNT, will come from.
Pair the development of team academies with a sane and steady increase in the cap and we’ll keep most of our good to really good players here. And the ones who go and play in other leagues will bring experience of playing other styles of football to the USMNT.
Bringing in a measured number of these big name guys is good, but lets take the league to where they know better than to try to show up for a payday as the their sun sets.

  16. A PLAYER LIKE HIM IS NOT SUITED TO BE A DP IN THE MLS (NOT SAYING HE NOT A GREAT ADDITION TO THE LEAUGE OR TEAM) BUT THE DP SHOULD BE USED AS BOUTH A GREAT FUTBALLER AND A GREAT MAKETING TOOL IE. FREDDY,ANGLE,BECKHAM ARE THE BEST EXAMPLES THE DP SHOULD BE A STRONGER ATTACKER.
