REPORT: Seattle Sounders Increase capacity to 35,807

Posted by Lenny Laymon Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 8:34 pm

It is official the Seattle Sounders FC have opened up the upper section like they did for the playoff match against Houston Dynamo increasing the sellout attendance to 35,807.

After an unprecedented 98% renewal rate for season tickets and about 10,000 person waiting list the Sounders opened up the much talk about box seats they made available for the Houston match.

This comes following a mass movement of the last years season ticket holders that wished to move their seats to another part of the stadium. The movement was caused by the section below the isles unexpected standing for the entire 90 minutes of every game as well as the general admission (supporters) section becoming the prime seating of many wanting to join the ECS, Gorilla FC, Immortal Fury and Black Hills Melitia. People wanting to join the North End Supporters group located in club style seating has also adding to the game day experience and demand to change seat locations.

The Sounders had to accommodate the other ticket holders that are unable or not wanting to stand the entire match.

With the increased attendance and the reshuffling of the season ticket holders the SSFC having a 98% renewal satisfying the fans needing and wanting to change seats.

However the new season ticket holders will see a 30% increase over the renewing ticket holders. The Sounders said they will hold pricing for 3 years for the initial season ticket holders.

  2. I really hope this craziness lasts in Seattle. Good on you Sounders! If only BMO Field would expand some more, the 1200 seats being added is not enough.

  4. I agree. I understand the desire to fill up the stadiums, but I don’t like the idea of building stadiums that can’t be expanded to reach the 40K+ that we hope will someday be at every match.

  6. Are you sure it’s 35,000? I heard that they were opening up the Hawks Nest, and now with the lower ring on the 300 level open it seems it would be more. Are they only plan on opening on side of the 300 level?

    March doesn’t come soon enough.

  8. I suspect they are trying to segregate the families first by offering up the loge level, then replace those seats with people wanting to move, and finally go to the rest of the demand for the Hawks Nest. When I talked to my rep she said they still hadn’t even touched the waiting list and were still getting deposits. I suspect we’ll end up with a capacity around 40k with 32k season tickets.

  12. Yeah, the Hawks Nest is out, at least for the time being.

The word is that the loge seats will be “all inclusive” like the North End seats. All the soda, hotdogs and cheap nachos you can choke down.

  16. I think it’s a smart choice. Hawk’s Nest is good, but the loge seats are some of the best view in the place. The only complaints I’ve heard are from families that don’t want to stand or kids that can’t see because of the standing. The loge fixes that, the Nest wouldn’t.

What in the world are you talking about Wow-guy? “Legible” has to do with whether or not you can read the writing. Did you change the default in your browser or something?

  18. I can see them opening more up mid-season like this year. Maybe you expand more in the upper deck or you open the hawks nest. The partial season tickets went like crazy. So that might be the next step. Gotta love it though. Being able to expand at will is great.

  20. Looks like SSFC is the only MLS team to take full advantage of their NFL subsidy.

  22. Word to Seattle. Open the entire stadium and sell it out. That would be awesome. I’d move to Seattle but I got front row seats in SLC!

Props to SSFC from a RSL fan. Keep bringing in the fans.

I just hope you all get real grass soon. Then the USMNT could set up a base there with 65k+ US only fans for every game. Awesomeness.

I’m glad to see soccer picking up steam in the good ol usa.

  24. I hate to say it but there will never be natural grass. Our climate simply would not support having throwball and football on it at the same time. Our turf is the best you can buy so it’s better than most MLS grass fields, but it will never be a top notch grass pitch.

  28. Never say never on a grass pitch. They have obstacles to work out but if Chicago can maintain grass at Soldier field during the winter months i think the wet climate of seattle can. Plus all the MLS has to do is demand that it be switched to grass, its contractually written that Qwest must have a grass pitch once a Major League Soccer team is there
