REPORT: FC Dallas Marketing Changes Direction, Launches Hardcore Soccer Supporter’s Site

Posted by mlsrumors Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 2:48 pm

In further confirmation that the league’s new “supporter friendly” policies have been made into a best practice, FC Dallas, long a club which seemed to shun the supporters group culture has at last launched a website and video marketing campaign aimed at turning that around. Perhaps it was scenes from Houston, Chicago, DC, Toronto and Seattle this season that finally forced them over the edge. Robert Kraft, are you listening?

BTW Dallas, nice font. ;)

FC DALLAS LAUNCHES WEARENOTSPECTATORS.COM

Site features contest to win two 2010 season tickets

FRISCO, Texas (Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009) – FC Dallas launched WeAreNotSpectators.com this week celebrating soccer supporters and offering a chance to win two 2010 FC Dallas season tickets in the supporters’ section, valued at $340.

Visitors to the site can register for the season ticket contest from now until Dec. 31 with the winner announced on Jan. 4. The site also hosts videos of fans and players around the Dallas/Fort Worth area playing and supporting soccer.

WeAreNotSpectators.com highlights how soccer fans display their passion for “The Beautiful Game.” As much a part of the game as the players themselves, soccer fans and their colorful brand of chanting, banner-waving, drum-banging support combine for an atmosphere unlike any other experience in sports.

FC Dallas opens the 2010 Major League Soccer season at home March 27 against in-state rival Houston at Pizza Hut Park. Affordable season ticket plans are available now. For more information visit FCDallas.com or call 1.888.FCD.GOAL (323-4625).

  4. As a Rev fan since day one I’ve spited the Kraft family for some time. However, the Revs started marketing towards supporters at the beginning of this past season. They launched a “Defend the Fort” campaign, started a website dedicated to supporters, and offered special season ticket pricing of only $200 in the Fort.

Only time will tell if these new marketing campaigns will work, however I think it’s highly unlikely. Security at Gillette is terrible in the Fort, they treat the Midnight Riders and Rev Army like hooligans. This along with the poor attendance will prevent the Revs from attracting more passionate fans and creating a better atmosphere.

Sadly I think the only thing that can change the glum future for this franchise is an urban SSS and a complete rebrand. And for the last time, the Revs should not be rebranded to a team that where’s green and white and has Irish connections. It’s just plain ignorant, there aren’t nearly as many Irish or Irish soccer fans in Boston than all of you think. The Revs would be much better off signing a Brazilian or Portuguese, as those two ethnic groups have far more passionate and large communities in the Greater Boston area.

  6. just another coperate backed face for fans. nice try though. btw FC Dallas, you dont intimidate teams. FC dallas doesnt even make the vietnam soccer team shake in their boots. im not a racist but fc dallas fans are just a bunch of mexicans who wish they were at a chivas or america game. fans should be organic, not started by a mls “franchise”(they are clubs not franshises, idc how americas sport structure works). i was watching the LDU vs Fluminese game last nite and i saw average fans shoot fireworks and wave thousands of flags during the game. that is what we need. so far chicago Fire and DC United are the best hardcore fans. seattle sounders fc has a impresive crowd but i have the feeling that its coperate and just hype for the first season. i really hope im wrong. remember Ne Revolution? the first season was incredible now they just draw a couple of fans who’s cable went out. same goes for us New “yorkers”. but i just mls dont make even more stupid “family friendly” restrictions and eventually put in a choreographer for every mls team. that is when i will truely leave mls. and im a fan who LOVES MLS

  8. and i agree with “kraft sucks’what we need are urban SSS, ( i know he was talking about his revs but for all clubs) not a SSS that is located 50 miles away from the place they claim to represent.i know its too late for some (i dont think the guys from ‘impossible movers’ will move RBA to Queens. NJ’ers dont deserve such a nice park) but for those who still needs a SSS they should place their SSS in the urban area and not in a near by town. because it will provide fans a easier access to the stadia access more visual advertisement (the stadium) and more fans and it just makes sense for the name. (ie chicago fire = bridgeview fire, or la galaxy = carson galaxy etc) the only thing good about locating a SSS in the outskirts is redevelopment for that town (ie chester PA or Harrison Nj). but it would be a shame if DC Unitd would move to Baltimore and b Baltimore UNited cuz DC Untie wouldnt make sense.

  12. As far as I’m concerned anyone who’s a Red Bulls fan shouldn’t even be allowed to speak, especially about other teams. I mean jesus your team is named after a cancerous shit drink!

FC Frisco couldn’t intimidate a team of soccer moms!

  15. S8OT Supporter Says:
  16. NYRB how can you say that putting a stadium in the city is the best choice – yes for marketing purposes i think that is the best case scenario for a team that really really wants to be in the city in which they represent – however, putting a sss stadium in a urban setting really needs two things – the space to do it and the proper means for transportation. When the fire decided to put toyota park in bridgeview – i couldnt have been happier. The commute is easier (i am about 30 minutes from either bridgeview or downtown) and the traffic is alot less hectic than if it were right in downtown chicago – and by the way – where the hell would have the fire built that stadium in a city that is already well developed (this aint dubai where we can make our own islands when we want to expand).

  18. I second everything “Kraft Sucks” said. This looks exactly like The Revs’ “Defend The Fort” campaign which was nice but has improved very little.

For those interested in their plans for next year visit DefendTheFort.net and check out the “If you could ask one question…” thread where you’ll learn next year’s big marketing plan is (drumroll)…a new website.

  25. RevsFan Says:
  26. Going w/ what Kapt Powers said, Brian Billelo states on DefendTheFort that the FO’s favorite scenario is to put an SSS right around Boston… sadly the tone of that response also seemed to indicate that there is no hurry to do so…

  30. For all the haters… yes, I’m looking at you New Jersey Redbulls fan, you need to stfu and hope that the Dallas FO is sincere in it’s pandering to the hardcore fan.

For that matter, any team that isn’t pandering to it’s hardcore fans is destined to failure and mediocrity (either on the field or off). So huzzah! to Dallas FC and hopefully their FO is commited to embracing it’s hardcore fans.

  32. Hey lets stop hating on Dallas, at least they are trying to spread the word, people in colorado are doing 0 to help the team. If it does not work then things cant get worse, now if it works at least watching games in Frisco will not be as dull as columbus used to be before there supporters group got big. the passion in the stands can be felt by people watching on TV and makes a game bigger than it really is. Look there were times in Columbus where there was 18k fans yet it the atmosphere was dull, and during the playoffs this year there was like what 11k fans and the atmosphere was 3 times better. Supporters groups are what makes futbol that much better.

  33. HammerHead Says:
  34. I have been supporting FC Dallas since I moved to Texas 2 years ago. This year I got involved with the Inferno and although a small group, it’s passion and committment to TEAM is unquestionable. Having been to so many MLS games all over the country, I can honestly say I have not found 1 home stadium with fans passionate enough that any of you should be throwing shit at FCD! Before you slag off another team, look to your own house and ask yourself are you truly intimidating? Unless you are Toronto or Seattle… just shut up!

    (Report comment)

  35. S8OT Supporter Says:
  36. HammerHead how can you say seattle and toronto are the only home stadiums with passionate enough fans – ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME I am a die hard fire supporter and i would even suggest 2 other teams besides the fire that are and if not more intimidating that toranto or seattle. Have you been to a fire game since the team moved to Toyota Park. The supporters and team have a tremendous home record and i believe even this pass season – oh wait let me get the exact date 6/5/09 vs Houston – that even your own proud Texas state announcers were in marvel with that section 8 was doing in the stands and wishes every stadium was like that (if you dont believe me look it up on youtube). I really take pride in making every fire home game the best that it can be and in my mind we have the fans for home games in the league. Now i cant say that i have been to a seattle game but from the sounds and look of it i would love to egt up there for a fire/seattle game to soak in the atmosphere and compare that to a chicago home game

  37. dan Says:
  38. what i think he meant was sold out passionate fans because those are the only 2 clubs that sell out on a consistant basist. not counting KC but thats only because there current stadium seats a lil over 10k.
i think fc dallas is heading in the right direction. Red Bull fans have little room to talk right now. there numbers were just as bad as FC dallas and NE england last year.
