REPORT: USL’s Crystal Palace Baltimore to be Rebranded “FC Baltimore”?

Posted by mlsrumors Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at 4:01 pm

In the ever changing soccer landscape in the division below MLS it appears more change is underway. The newly minted NASL registered the trademark “FC Baltimore” on November 23, 2009. This is the first new name the new NASL has registered. Other trademarks they have registered were simply bringing old NASL names back to life. Could this mean an end to Crystal Palace’s affiliation with the club? Who knows?

  4. that logo should be used for D.C. United, nice American looking eagle and a little modify it could be nice for D.C. United. and F.C. Baltimore sounds very nice, very smooth, What about Baltimore City F.C.. But you know one thing, the NASL sounds like is going to do everything the MLS has not done or will learn from MLS mistakes and is going to do real soccer shit with the U.S. Put it this way, MLS shoud become open their eyes because if NASL makes better moves, the MLS is gonna be a wanna be NASL. Remember my words, MLS should change name in the future no matter what. NASl and MLS will unite, maybe, thats is NASL does not become a fan favorite of the US soccer fans. Have you guys noticed, all the new MLS teams are being a very good hit in the MLS and even better than the old MLS teams. So, that means NASL will have better thoughts and will actually will be better than MLS, but just with less money.

  6. @vic10 dude ive respected u in the past but now im reading ur stuff an realized ur only answer to things is to change the name of MLS. knock it off. maybe it will work for marketing but it wont make US the best league in the world.

  8. Furious pace of rebranding by the NASL. I like it all so far, so let’s see where this goes.

  10. i fell you, hopefully it will happen in tuhe future but i dont mean the league will get powerful or become one of the best. Changing the league name will only give it life, and more fresh blood. But do you guys realize how every new MLS team that joins the league, is better than the other MLS teams. Better fans, better recognition instead of Galaxy or D.C. getting better. In other leagues, lets say like the NFL, when a new franchise joins the NFL, it can barely walk with the ball. And in the MLS, they come in like a junior in high school. So lets say the NASL does better thn the MLS, common sense with less money but what would MLS do. Add 2 dps per team, raise the salary cap, pressure the sucky teams, better marketin for the league and teams. Like so many soccer fans are saying in the U.S., soccer is maturing before our eyes and if MLS does not make moves, NASL will, NFL, NBA,NHL, MLB will make moves to kill the MLS momentum

  12. by the way, Baltimore FC or FC Baltimore gets my attention. The name sounds good, and something tells me, this could be another TFC and hopefully Philly. I think Baltimore can surprise a lot people, i also think Tampa Bay can be a good one in the south. Who can be the next Seattle, maybe Vancouver, but i doubt it. Its gonna take years for a team or new franchise can be like Seattle. Seattle is like a Man U to the U.S., or a Barcelona, or a Club America or Club Chivas. We need another Seattle and i believe NYC2 can be that one, or the Impact de Montreal.

  14. “But do you guys realize how every new MLS team that joins the league, is better than the other MLS teams.”

That’s not completely true, Vic10. It is true that Seattle was successful both on and off the pitch this season, but while Toronto has the attendance, their game sucks, and Chivas makes the playoffs frequently but has mediocre(as best) fan support. SJ? Chicago has done okay on the pitch and okay with fan support. Yes, RSL won the MLS Cup, but they had a sub-500 season and their fan support is dodgy at best.

The newly minted NASL will be just another USL 2nd division league with little to no impact on MLS.

  16. Or it could be the ABA or UFL that was needed to force MLS to become competitive. If they both push each other than nothing but good things can come of it. If one fails than obviously the other would hand pick the money-making franchises that would help their own league. It’s a win in the present and a win in the future.

  18. I seriously only read the comments of these NASL stories for the latest vic10 tinfoil hat posting about how NASL, a league that is applying for (and hasn’t gotten yet) Division II status in America and is comprised mostly of teams with under 5K average attendance, is going to somehow either take over from MLS or merge with it.

By the way, vic, DC United couldn’t use that logo. Its the Crystal Palace FC logo. They’ve been around since 1905.

I do agree that if this league gets off the ground it could possibly “push” MLS in the same way the WHA did the NHL and the ABA did the NBA. If it gets off the ground.

  19. Go Caps Says:
  20. Nobody at the NASL realistically thinks they are going to topple the MLS, or even compete with it.

This has much more to do with bringing a sense of professionalism to the continent’s second division, as this has been sorely lacking under the mismanagement of USL-1.

USL-1 is notorious for piss poor decision making with respect to marketing, approval of ownership groups, selection of expansion cities, and approval of stadia.

The owners breaking away from USL-1 have had enough with the fact that there is absolutely no accountability for these poor decisions.

In spite of whatever talent has been fielded on the pitch, USL-1 has earned itself a reputation for presenting a product which appears amateurish, unprofessional, third rate, and produced on a bargain basement budget.

The owners backing the new NASL are looking to change all that. They know that the gap between the top flight and the second division does not need to be as vast as it has been under USL’s mismanagement.

It’s my hope, and I’m sure it’s theirs too, is that the NASL will be a league which captalizes on the growing interest in the sport, and compliments the success of MLS.

NASL has a valuable role to fill – to bring truly *professional* soccer to strong markets which don’t have the population, stadia or financial backing to satisfy “major league” requirements.

They also have the advantage of learning from all the mistakes made by USL and MLS up to this point.

The English Championship is a great example of what kind of potential a properly-managed Division 2 can be. Of course it’s not the Premiership… but it’s certainly not amateur-looking rubbish played at an empty high school stadium on a pitch marred by gridiron lines either.

Time for USL to accept that it can no longer rest on its laurels as the continent’s second division. Unless changes are made from the top down, it really shouldn’t kid itself about aspiring to be anything but Division 3.
