After being staunchly vocal against the new breakaway league just last week, the Rochester Rhinos have left the USL for the new NASL. Here’s an audio interview with Rochester Owner Robert Clark:

Meanwhile in Canada, this report from the Edmonton Journal that Edmonton will join the league with their old NASL name the Drillers in 2011:

Professional soccer is expected to venture into Edmonton in the spring of 2011.
An announcement likely will be made some time this week that a local franchise will replace the Vancouver Whitecaps in a revived North American Soccer League.
The team, expected to take on the name of the former North American Professional Soccer League’s Drillers, will replace the Whitecaps, who will join the new venture in 2010 but will shift the following year to the top-tier Major League Soccer, which includes the likes of Toronto FC.
Edmonton is expected to join forces with sides from Baltimore, Carolina, St. Louis, Atlanta, Miami and Tampa Bay in a new second-tier NASL.
With Rochester on board, that makes our rumor from a week ago very plausible.

Edmonton? Man, someone’s gotta find a way to get a franchise here in Winnipeg. Multi-cultural city, centrally located…we could make it work!

Sounds like a good idea. I hope this all comes together. NASL is rolling. I would love to see a viable 2nd teir league that has cities that the MLS doesnt.

I would like to see football teams that don’t have ridiculously stupid names. Is it too much? Or how ’bout The Winnipeg Wallabies! We can sow little tails onto their kits. It’d be so cute! The kids would love it.

how long until this becomes MLS2?
Seeing as half the teams are going to be promoted within a few years anyway… get some other cities and fill out the league, then in like 10 years after things are stable begin the Pro/rel system.

Anyone who speaks of pro/rel in the future should be banned for life! IT WON’T HAPPEN! Stop dreaming, what the hell is the use to speak of it?

I like the part at the end of the Canada.com article where it says less than 16K fans showed up for a River Plate vs. Everton friendly in Edmonton. If you can’t get people out for “names” like that, how are you gonna get them for the Rhinos and Railhawks?

Edmonton? I expected Calgary better choice then Edmonton, since Canada’s best footballer is from Calgary. CoughHargreavesCough
