EDITORIAL: Thierry Henry, Handball and the Irish

Posted by Stephen Constantine Sunday, November 29th, 2009 at 9:09 am

What’s all the fuss about?

Henry lends a hand

Henry lends a hand

I am hearing plenty of fans especially the Irish lads complain about the Thierry Henry hand ball incident and really not sure why all the fuss.

Had it been the other way round would the Irish be offering the French a re match?

Like heck they would!

The real questions that should be asked are how come the ball was allowed to bounce inside the six yard box? Where were the defenders when Henry ran on the outside to even be in a position to play the ball? What was the keeper thinking? he either has to come out and get the ball in his six yard box or allow the defender to try and clear and position himself just off the first post as opposed to coming almost to the by line and allowing the ball to be crossed past him when if he would have been in a better position he catches the cross at chest height end of story.

The first rule for any defender is don’t let the ball bounce in front of you never mind in the 18 yard box I mean come on basic defending here.

As for Henry being a cheat …..I think that is a little harsh sure it was hand ball no doubt, had the ref seen it it would have been a yellow card and a free kick but don’t we see that all that time in the game, players diving, conning refs to get a penalty, in one of my games against Mali a World Cup Qualifier (I might add) we had a player elbowed in the face in the 85th minute clear as daylight 10 feet in direct line with the referee, and was does he do? Awards a free kick to Mali, and while the lad is getting 4 stitches in his face they score a goal that was clearly offside!!

Some of the mistakes made by referees are shocking and more should be done when they make such mistakes. That is an issue which FIFA need to address in my opinion but getting back to Henry he did what every professional in the game will do , what ever it takes to win , I don’t think he said oh the ball is going out let me hand ball it back in, in that split second he did what any of us would have done he stuck his hand out hoped the ref wouldn’t see it and see what happens after all he didn’t score he could not even be sure that the pass would get where he wanted it. The ref didn’t see it the linesman didn’t see it and end of, get on with it.

There is another issue for me here and that is why why why cant we have instant video replay ??? at this level with so much at stake , jobs, money ,careers, and of course the good of the game. As an English man I must say that you guys on this side of the pond have really got that down to a fine art so why cant we have it in football / soccer ?  there have been so many cases where had we had that ability then some very unfair and unsporting incidents would have been avoided case in point the other night that broke the Irish hearts and lets be fair they deserved to go through based on that performance …………FIFA argue it will take the human element from the game, I would argue that there are people who lose their jobs on some of the decisions that are made or not made by the referee and having someone in the booth upstairs in cooperation with the fourth official can sort these cases out in a matter of seconds …….add a minute on at the end of the half if you have to.

I don’t say for all cases, obviously for goal line incidents, for violent conduct , and for result changing situations, so a goal scored from an offside position call it ! the ball is handled in the area award the penalty , they can do this in tennis, in American Football and god knows how many other sports why not our game the most beautiful game, the most watched, the most attended  the best game in the world  bar none !!

  14. it’s the same as people who take Steroids in Baseball. It’s up to the people who drug test to catch them… it’s not the players fault for trying to win at any cost. blame the doctors!

  16. Dumb fucks- Henry reacted like NEARLY every player in his position would (oh, except for the gods above me with total mind and body control). It was a reaction. He was playing to win. The refs missed the call. Happens every day. Got off your high horse. You all probably moral ingrates anyway trying to project your pathetic little lives on to someone that is 10x the man you are.

  22. Henry: Pure reaction with the handball no? He comes out and says he will go along with the re playing of the game, of course he does cause he knows there is no way FIFA will do it, and he looks better in the public eye. I’m sure the Irish would feel bad as the French should now.

  26. Nice sentence structure. Speculation that the other side would have cheated too does not excuse the fact that it was still wrong to do. Henry deserves whatever backlash he gets.

  27. z Says:
  28. I’m not a fan of the celebration. If he used his hand deliberately it could be cheating, but he doesn’t have a whistle and it’s up to the ref’s to make the call. But when you writhe on the ground faking a hard tackle in the box, or celebrate a goal like you didn’t just use your hands, that’s the line. I wish he had shrugged, and walked away. Then whatever is called is called.

  29. Patrick In San Jose Says:
  30. He committed a foul, not murder. It’s up to the refs and governing bodies to enforce rules. I’m Irish and I’m not crying about it. Henry is a great player, not a cheat. Have the refs or FIFA apologized? Stop blaming him and Maradona for your team’s losing already! Get on with it.

  32. Im Spanish American and i think that if either Spain or USA got eliminated from WCup play b/c of an intentional handball I’d be rather pissed to say the least. So i dont see how anyone can say get over it or it happens all of the time accept it b/c you have to wait another 4 yrs to experiance the beauty of the WC

  34. wow “Mountaineer Pride Says” has some serious psychological problems. you should consider seeking help there pal. ease it up next time.

if you can’t see that a blatant handball like that in a game of that magnitude for a spot in the WORLD CUP isn’t different than just people living slightly immoral lives on a daily basis, you’re the “pathetic” idiot here and NOT everyone else.

try some medication. it might help cure your skewed vision on life.

While we are at it I’d like to suggest a replay the England/Argentina ‘86 quarter final – with the original teams. That was a bigger travesty – if England had won that match they had an easy semi against Belgium and then the inevitable PK shootout with the Germans for the WC.

If nothing else it will let Terry Butcher kick Maradona up and down the pitch for 90 minutes :-)

Seriously Henry did break the Laws of the Game – all players do it at some time in a career as long as his – most of them more than him. Officials missed the call – they miss them all the time. Time to move on.
