According to Mark Weber at Canada.com (click here for the original article and all the details):
Co-owner Jeff Mallett confirmed the decision to keep with history Tuesday:
“We are fully behind continuing the Whitecaps name.”
It will also be retained by Whitecaps teams across all tiers. Vancouver is part of a breakaway United Soccer Leagues First Division group awaiting U.S. Soccer Federation approval for a new second-tier league for 2010. That loop is to take the old North American Soccer League name.
The Whitecaps plan to reveal a new logo and uniforms around May. The design is being refined by adidas.
Having the name “Whitecaps” written across jerseys could well be a thing of the past, though.
What do you think? Like that the USL teams are sticking with their original names or were you hoping for a rebranding? How would you change the logo and uniforms for MLS? What sponsor do you expect on the Whtiecaps jersey?

I’m OK with the old Whitecaps look. I imagine if the namebar goes away, it’s to make-way for a shirt sponsor.

The Whitecaps name is to Canadian soccer what the Cosmos name is to American soccer. They would have been insane not to keep it.
It would not at all surprise me if we see “EA Sports” branded on their uniform. I hope and expect Vancouver to be a very exciting addition to MLS.

Happy about them keeping the name. Thrilled that they’ll undergo a logo redesign. Wonder if they’ll tweak the colors?

Would have preferred a re-brand to FC Vancouver and had them just have the nickname Whitecaps, but it definitely won’t be one of the poorer names in the league. Might we see something like Vancouver Whitecaps FC like Seattle did? At least they’ll be upgrading that atrocious logo.

FC Vancouver?? that’s F’ng original there. Better yet, how about Vancouver FC, bet you didn’t think of that one!

The current logo is a bit cartoony for the current “serious business” school of MLS design. They should go retro and resurrect the old NASL logo.

I think they should look to redesign the old NASL logo and get rid of the current ugly ass one. They need to keep it simple and classy. They should keep the vertical stripe, it’s tradition. Just get the sponsor over the top of the stripe like Chicago.

Ugh, if they keep the stripe, I hope they DON’T do what Chicago did. That is straight FUGLY. Sorry to you Fire fans out there, but that’s not what Vancouver’s stripe is for. From our point of view, there is no point in keeping it if it doesn’t have the traditional “Whitecaps” or “Vancouver” in it (home and away jerseys, respectively)
I would much prefer they revamp their 86ers coat of arms, use that as a crest on the left upper torso, and either a) eliminate the vertical stripe & text for a sponsor or b) keep the stripe & text with a sponsor on the stomach, sleeves or back.
One of our better unis from the APSL days featured a silver Canterbury lager patch on the stomach, and Arco Gas on a banner at the rear shirt tail.
Final point: there is nobody in Vancouver who likes the present logo. It was introduced in 2001 by our former owner who saw fit to run match days at Swangard like a day care for little kids. When Kerfoot took over, there was a lot invested in this logo in terms of merchandising, so it made more sense to leave the logo change until a) we moved leagues or b) we built our stadium.

Cool, hope Portland does the same.

antnee7898: Portland said from the very start they were keeping the name and logo. As a matter of fact Both the name and logo are part of the temporary website, Vancouver on the other hand had not said that or included the name or logo on their site. This is the first time they mention keeping the name.

Portlands getting a new logo

Fine as a nickname, but not as an official name.
Stick in the city/town name with an FC before, or after.
Otherwise, risk sounding as bad as “Gators” or “Lakers.”

nonethanks
Whitecaps like Sounders and Timbers has dated back to the NASL years it would be an insult to the fanbase to suddenly ignore it the history behind the brand and go with something else.

“The design is being refined by adidas.”
Is that possible?

A jersey similar to Velez or Bordeaux with a big “V” on it would make sense, no?

Oh great, so when Montreal joins, they’ll be the Manic and old moneybags Eddie Firmani can go back to skimming money off players contracts if they want to stay like he used to?
So, Vancouver is gonna play one year in the USL, one year in this bastard league (how serious is a league whose two top teams are planning to leave ASAP? Its like geting married and knowing the date of your divorce already.) and one year in the MLS? Are we sure that they wont be trying a fourth league after that?
Maybe tour the continent like the globetrotters.
