The whole Montreal in USL, NASL or MLS story gets stranger by the day especially if the letter below is to be believed:
Received moments ago by email:
I cannot tell you who it is, but it comes from a very reliable source who has given me reliable info many times in the past. So here goes…
The Montreal Impact is having second thoughts about the NASL (which, according to my source, explains why Saputo has been very quiet about the NASL in the past few days). The Impact currently are looking for a deal with MLS to join in 2011 instead of Portland, who still needs to resolve their stadium issue, which irritates Don Garber. Apparently, Montreal has secured public funds for the expansion of Saputo Stadium, but it hasn’t been announced yet because the Montreal Formula 1 GP saga is not over yet, and the government wants to deal with that first. If the MLS deal goes through for 2011, Montreal would not field a team in 2010 in either the USL or the NASL (which, again, according to my source, explains why they haven’t signed new players so far; the players under contract would be going on-loan to various teams for the season… doesn’t say if it’ll be NASL or USL though.).

Come, Montreal, get your shit together, already!

Portland’s stadium renovations are as good as done… Just need to get some minor details hammered out (zoning for the onsite sports medicine clinic) and draw up the final documentation for City Council to sign off.
Saputo is so full of himself… He turned his nose up at Garber over $5MM and now he’s trying so hard he’s stumbling over himself.

Montreal is not replacing Portland that’s just BS

This sounds like USL-1 generated FUD to me.

Portland getting bumped for Montreal is about as likely to happen as Montreal getting Arsene Wenger to coach their team.
The deal in Portland is done. Montreal will be lucky to get in by 2012. Joey Saputo is nuts and Don Garber knows it. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Joey actually did tell someone he’s going to try to negotiate with MLS for Montreal to be admitted rather than Portland. He’s the only person crazy enough to actually think that might happen.

The deal in Portland is not done. The Paulson family and the city council are still hashing out a lot of details. The deadline is December or early January. This was reported a couple months ago after the last deadline, on October 1, passed without a deal having been struck.

Edward…as someone in the know. The deal in Portland is done. These are simply negotiation tactics for a baseball stadium. MLS deal is happening regardless as MP has other offers for the baseball team he is holding out on.

I know this is a rumors site but come on!
An anonymous guy sends a rumor based on an anonymous source……

Portland is done deal . Montreal is laughable.

this rumour is laughable. JS is being quiet because he is waiting for USSF to sign off on new league. Plyers are not resigned because their is no league yet, hence no league contracts! MLS is confirmed for 2012.

The people saying that Portland “is a done deal” should really say “I believe that the deal will be done before the deadline” … because when you ask them to clarify, that is how they explain themselves. The facts are that the deal is not done. If it was done, the Paulson family and the city wouldn’t still be negotiating the deal, would they?

Edward
Wrong.
The financing deal has been approved already there is a few things left to take care of before its finalized. Montreal doesn’t even have a funding plan approved yet alone finalized.

pick a lane Montreal! and like the first commment said GET YOUR SHIT TOGHETER! montreal is the leader of this whole TOA gang and now they want to back off after all the shit they made the other cluba go throu? switching and creating a new league is not a toy to play with. this is just my drunken side speaking but with all the canadians wanting a club just create your own damn league.
as for the whole portland thing i wouldnt say the deal is done yet due to the whole stadium renovation but i think don garber and the portland board know what they are doing, otherwise portland wouldnt have been givin the club berth. then again even though don garber says he wants to slowly progress to not be another “NASL” (pun inteded) i think just because theres a market in the city , doesnt mean a club should be planted there. they [expansion clubs] seem to wait until the club berth is given to them THEN sort out the stadium deals etc, etc. portlands deal is i would say 80% done but come on your due for next year! so new clubs should have their package toghether before they want to join, not the actual stadium built but the security of it being built. i know im rambling on but look at NY (really NJ, stupid jersey), they said “the stadium is coming” in ‘99 now its ‘09 and thank God (even though i dont like our brand) Red bull came and gave us one. good day

I still don’t get the whole NASL concept to begin with. To me, it’s simply a ploy to get the USL to buckle to the demands of the teams leaving. I really don’t understand why Vancouver, Portland and Montreal want to start a league of 9 teams that would have 33% of those teams leave within 2 years of the league starting. Makes absolutely no business sense to start a league that you know will be unstable from the start… So, who really knows what Montreal is really trying to do…

THIS IS SUCH BS. I AM FROM MONTREAL AND I KNOW 5 OR 6 PLAYERS VERY WELL. THEY HAVE ALL BEEN SIGNED TO CONTRACTS FOR NEXT SEASON. SO THIS RUMOR IS SOOOOOOOOOOO BAD…..GOOD LUCK FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS HOAX!!!!!!

gstommylee – You contradict yourself. You say I am wrong, but then your explanation proves I am right. I don’t care about trying to prove that I am right anyways. I am just pointing out the obvious reality and hate to see people spouting things that are so obviously not true. It hurts my brain. The deal in Portland is not done. If it was done, they still wouldn’t be negotiating the details, and they wouldn’t have set a deadline for those details to be worked out.

gstommylee – What is the difference between “approved” and “finalized”? I live in Portland and have closely followed the entire MLS adventure since 2007. Our city council voted in July to pursue a deal with the Paulson family based on certain conditions and with a deadline of October 1. That deadline has been extended until December or early January, and some of the funding mechanisms have to change because this is taking so long. The city can reject any design that is submitted by the Paulsons and the Goose Hollow neighborhood association can also put a wrench in the deal. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, especially with Randy Leonard leading the negotiations. He is our defacto mayor and a real hothead. I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw a temper tantrum and killed the whole thing.

I following it to.
The package deal has been approved so the money is but it just needs to be finalized so the money can be used. There is a couple things still need to be taken care of but its pretty much a done thing compared to Montreal. The only thing bogging the way merrit wants to add a sports clinic and the zoning codes needs to be adjusted to allow that and how is the rent gonna be split from that. Unless you mean that regarding the funding mechanism changing i have no idea what changings to the funding you are talking about. But they have the votes 4-1 to be exact they want to make sure any remaining issues is ironed out before finalizing the deal.
Even MLS commissioner says its a done deal.
Yes Leonard likes to drama things up but he is not that stupid. Leonard won’t kill the deal they didn’t come this far to suddenly kill it.

I assume NASL has been formed, b/c the owners of these teams want a bigger piece of the pie (more money) and they’re not getting it from the USL. Also, they probably think they can form some kind of alliance with MLS and sort out promotion/relegation. Why not bring Montreal into the league in 2011 with Portland and Vancouver and a 20th team in 2012? Also, I think the lower leagues should have B teams or minor league teams for the MLS teams. Once players graduate from the academies (if MLS teams would actually use them) and also when younger players or college players sign, why not put them into the B team (not a reserve team) but a minor league team like in baseball. These teams can play a full season and get experience. Players can be sold, traded and bought for these teams and be a seperate intity but have ties to the big club. In Spain they do something similar but it’s the reserve teams who play in the lower leagues.

Edward,
The Portland deal is done.
Done.
Get off it.

i know for a fact that most of the players got re-signed, i am a personal friend with half of the players on the team. i can tell you for a fact that there are only 2 players left to re-sign from last year.
your story is not far fetched however i do not think it is accurate. the saputo family is very concerned about image nore than anything else therefore i do not think that they would sit it out.

@Edward
The MLS deal in Portland is done. Behind the scenes it is complete. The only thing being held off right now is the announcement since negotiations on the Beavers are still ongoing. Paulson has offers to move the Beavers to other cities if nothing can be worked out in the Portland area.
Randy Leonard is not the defacto mayor. That was a worthless rag of a paper that said that and everyone with a nose in City Hall knows Adams is running a tight ship.

Braz and Placentino sign with Montreal for 2 more years.
This rumor is becoming more and more plausible by the minute!
