Every year the US Soccer federation rolls out it’s “Best of” awards. You can vote for things such as “Best goal”, “Best fan photo” and “Best soccer blog”. There were already a number of things wrong with the “Best soccer blog” nomination process. Chief among them, the fact that blogs run by people in the employ of a newspaper or cable network are considered along with independent grassroots blogs not run and financed directly by corporate interests.

Today we found out that notable blog The Yanks are Coming which had received a nomination and which had gone out in an email list of the nominees has been removed from the running without any explanation. Furthermore when someone asked about this on the US Soccer Federation website, their comments were deemed abusive and were removed.

Someone later asked about the removal of what was a legitimate question:

I saw the previous comments from “dseco” that were removed, and they were not abusive at all. S/he simply asked why ‘Yanks Abroad’ wasn’t on this list, since that blog WAS on the list in an email sent out from US Soccer about the finalists in this category.

Why is USSoccer censoring that?

To which there has, as yet, been no response.

We know that the voting process is political, legitimate nominations can be removed and if your blog is as critical of US Soccer decisions as other blogs around the world are of their national federations then forget it, your blog will not make the cut despite being a legitimate nominee. Someone else explained that:

What about Unprofessonal Foul.. and about five other excellent and surely more popular sites? The Guardian had the former in its top 5 if i recall. Who decides on the nominees? (There’s a decidedly blinkered bias for USMNT management decisions in the listed sites.) A real dent in this site’s credibility, if it had some to start.

EDITORIAL: Think much of the US Soccer “Best of” Awards? Our advice is that without transparency in being able to see many nominations are received for each nominee in each category, the awards have little credibility. Of course such transparency like many things in US Soccer will likely not happen until there is a major changing of the regime there. Don’t hold your breath.

  2. If you go on their forums they pull stuff off that they don’t like. Such as a treading topic about how boring Michael Kammarman is on Studio 90. I mean come on! Lets promote soccer here in the states, not make it boring!

  4. We agree Annon, which is why we no longer kiss up to them. This sport has grown well beyond where they can control dissent and critical looks at the Federation.

They should spend more time doing their job being an INDEPENDENT Federation acting on behalf of FIFA on behalf of hard working US soccer players. Instead it works in collusion with the league against the players union.

  18. Mike, your comments make about as much sense as someone going on Fox soccer or Soccernet and writing SOKKER SUX!!!

Do you troll for attention? To get people riled up?

Hopefully, MLS Rumors makes $$$ everytime you come here, for every page you load. Now that’s ironic, them making $$$ everytime you come here to troll.

  20. I don’t think Mike is trolling. I think he’s just trying to prove a point: if MLS Rumors does delete his post it is essentially guilty of the same crime it now is complaining about.
