I cannot tell you how I know this but I can tell you that USL-1 is finished, USL-1 and USL-2 are likely to merge and become Division 3 underneath MLS (Division 1) and the new NASL (Division 2). Bermuda is likely to drop out entirely and there has been talk that the Puerto Rico Islanders may play in an all Puerto Rican league at some point.

I don’t see the Islanders playing in the PRSL. They are too big of a club to compete in the “PDL” level of PRSL. Plus I highly doubt the league will operate next year since their website is down and there are reports of teams not paying their players and other financial issues. The Islanders need to stay in USL-1 or the NASL. They have brought a lot of positive attention to the Island and I hope they can continue to operate and compete at a high level.

This story keeps getting better and better.

still curious to see if the NASL will become a reserve league for MLS teams as i suspect it will be. Mostly i dont see Montreal and especially Vancouver giving up their academies just to join the MLS

What about the Rochester Rhinos and the other clubs.

It’s time US Soccer stepped in and unfucks this mess. USL/NASL owners, you are a debacle. Do what you’re told and be glad someone can save you from your incompetence.
Jesus, it’s like there are children running our professional soccer system.
(Report comment)
Derek,
What evidence can you present that our system is not ran by children?

Ossington Mental Youth,
One reason Vancouver and Montreal can move up to MLS successfully is because they already have well developed acadamies, which are now mandated for MLS clubs. But yeah, they may use NASL for their reserves squads.
(Report comment)
If this does happen, Rochester, the Stoke City owned and operated Austin club, the soon to come F.C. New York and, hopefully, the Islanders will jump to NASL in a heartbeat. Rochester’s owner is already playing coy about staying with USL anyway.
Cleveland might be going back down to USL-2 anyhow, and Charleston has already announced that they are moving to USL-2. This all would leave only enough teams for a single, smaller scale, USL division that might well be stronger than the current USL-2. As well as PDL, the W-League and USL’s extensive Super Y and Super-20 Leagues that are very important, and under appreciated, part of the development of the sport in the US and Canada. These “lower” leagues are what is truly important about USL and hopefully all this USL/NASL business doesn’t torpedo the bulk of USL activities.

Good lord, this is just getting bizarre.
I hope all the teams can remain intact and play. That’s all I really care about right now.

also theres been talk that the NASL will be the home of farm teams for the Whitecaps and Impact (impact currently have a team in Trois Rivieres that plays in the CSL, not sure about Whitecaps), it would be perfect ground to train young players and move them up when they are ready. Lord willing TFC puts one ahead (we currently have an academy team in the CSL as well but i suspect the NASL would give greater competition etc)

OMY- sounds good but can these clubs afford to fly their reserve teams all over the continent as well as their big club? I would venture to say that these teams are essentially little more than vanity for millionaire (with a small m) owners who want to play franchise owner. I do believe they sincerely are interested in growning the sport but these guys arent bottomless pits by any stretch. Unless MLS (which isnt exactly Daddy Warbucks) gets involved in funding I don’t see how these if feasbile. Better yet, USSF needs to contribute to the second division/feeder league for the “good of the game” in this country.

i smell promotion/relegation….atleast between the 2nd division and the 3rd. i know this will sound stupid but now there can be more american teams added to FIFA 12 manager mode!!!!!!!!

Talk to the president of our club today that came back from the USL general managers meeting and according to him the USL 2 is set to go and will have 7 teams and the possibility of North Virginia (PDL) to be promoted to the USL 2. I believe that this report is false and has no validity. As far as the USL 1 its all mess up and who knows what going to happen there.

I suspect Rhinos will jump to new NASL>
Luis,
how about PR & Bermuda joining T&T league?…if T&T could drop some weak teams there, a broader
carribean league might be a good thing for improved Concacaf CL play.
(Report comment)
An All Caribean League would be good for them. Too many bottomfeeders holding down the good clubs in T&T and Jamaica.

Capitol Hill :
Vancouver has the most complete, top to bottom professional youth development program in North America. Their “vanity youth reserves,” as you put it, just got back from training in Spain, beating Real Madrid’s U-18s, and drawing even with three other Spanish clubs. They compete at international tournaments on a regular basis, and also play a full season in PDL each year.
Add to that the Caps just hired the executive director of Tottenham Hotspur as their new CEO… the fact they already own their own training ground and are building an even bigger one.
And oh yeah… as for our owner, that’s billionaire with a B.
(Report comment)
Damn…Caps may be doing some damage in MLS.

I actually hope this is true.
I have absolutely no doubt that 3 tiers of professional soccer can be supported, if properly managed, marketed and financed.
If USL is smart, they take the Tier 3 status and make it their own by regionalizing this tier (sort of like PDL). PDL is a good amateur league but there are groups in PDL who feel hamstrung by the very short season and the inability to sign players to pro contracts. You could easily have a 4 Region USL Pro division as North America’s 3rd tier (8 teams in each division with limited or no interlocking play). PDL would be 4th tier.
I don’t know if it will happen but it should.

everything is falling in place for MLS, and sooner than later NASL will become MLS-2 MLS-3 MLS-4 or MLS changes to NASL and bring the name back because MLS name sucks. Or MLS and NASL unite and make a new name. Something has to happen, something has to happen with the MLS because they are involved but underground. Its the best for the league to unite in the future like when the league gets 20 teams. Having 20 teams, go for single table, rebrand some teams, change the league name to NASL or make NASL MLS. The League has to do something when they reach 20 teams. A new begining, new life, and time to kick NBAs NFLs MLBs ass and NHLs and expand to 24 or 22 teams.

Capitol Hill-
I suspect that keeping these farm teams might be voluntary at first, much like the academies were then fazed in permanently. ALthough it costs to fly players across the country pumping out and signing your own homegrown players is financially effective and beneficial for the nats and the clubs. Yes, Montreal, Vancouver and TFC can afford to fly these reserve players across the country to play these games, much if not all (except Van) of these games will be in the eastcoast anyways
(Report comment)
Both of these leagues are going to fold…
When unified, USL was losing 2-3 clubs each year (between USL 1 and USL 2) because of finance.
If you look at the new NASL, most of those clubs were in huge financial trouble before the fracture. Now their entire league infrastructure is in start-up mode, so they can expect another 5-year ramp up. You think they can go on another 5-years? Yep, me neither.
