The above is a historical map of the old NASL circa 1979.

You know that saying, “Everything old is new again.” Well you may want to get ready to welcome the new NASL into the ranks of North American footy. North American football aficionados may need to stop using NASL as descriptor representing a league as dead as bell bottoms, the series Dallas and Giorgio Chinaglia’s chances of every having anything to do with a new New York Cosmos and rather get used to it being the 2nd tier of North American soccer.

According to a search of the US Patent and TradeMark Database, USL breakaway club Miami FC has brought the long dormant trademark back to life this past week on November 16, 2009.

Such a move would allow the USL Team Owners Association to brand and market their league as the North American Soccer League.

Now with the NASL back, could the New York Cosmos with Pelé as President be far behind? Well according to this article in the Times of London maybe not…

You couldn’t make it up. Paul Kemsley — Lord Sugar’s former Apprentice lieutenant, whose £500m property empire imploded in June — has bought America’s most famous soccer club, the New York Cosmos.
Kemsley plans to turn the team, dormant since 1985, into a global lifestyle brand with retail, leisure and music arms. But how? Last I heard, “soccer” wasn’t all that popular in America.

He will have some help from Pele, the world’s greatest footballer, who ended his playing career at the Cosmos in 1977: Pele will be president of the company. Simon Greenberg, Chelsea football club’s departing communications and public affairs director, is also said to be on board. It is unclear whether there will be any role for Kemsley’s other pals, including Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley or Topshop’s Sir Philip Green.

The club’s first game under new management will be held next summer in Central Park. It will see the Cosmos play Kemsley’s beloved Spurs — he was vice-chairman at the club until October 2007. In the meantime, presumably, he will draft in some players and coaches. Rumours that he will try to lure David Beckham have so far proved unfounded.

What do you think of all this? Good move? Bit ambitious?

  2. Any chance you want to credit USL News, who had this first, or would you rather continue being unrepentant jackasses?

  6. It isn’t foolish. NASL also has a very powerful legacy… Tampa Bay Rowdies, Vancouver Whitecaps, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, San Jose Earthquakes. There is a reason why those names are still around today. It evokes a bit of history that a lot of fans still resonate to. Hell many NY fans still pine for the Cosmos.

  8. We did our own search as we do often for MLS and USL stuff therefore do not need to credit anyone. Had no idea USL News “had it first” but it doesn’t matter.

    Everything will work out just fine. LOL.

  12. I don’t see this league competing with MLS. FIFA would not allow that to happen. Where is the market? Half their bloody league is in MLS or soon will be. There is no way they have any success unless they hitch their wagon to MLS.

  14. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s being named NASL in interim. I think in the end the ultimate goal is to hitch itself to the MLS, the thing is they and the MLS have to insure that they are not going to get a lawsuit by USL by hitching to early, and it takes time for that kind of lawering. I should prolly point out that I have nothing but pure gut instincts to substantiate this and nothing more.

  16. There are going to be a lot of questions that need to be answered as a result of this breakaway league:

    Will it be considered 2nd division, alongside USL-1? How will that work?

    How will this “new” NASL and it’s 9 football clubs figure into the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament?

    Will future expansion come from start-up clubs or by pulling them from either the USL-1 or USL-2 ranks?

    Just thought I’d chip in my $0.02…..

  18. I agree with Yorkie. The NASL name is just for now. My bet is that both the MLS and the new “NASL” will build up their leagues ie: MLS – 20 teams, and then in 2012 when the MLS has 20 teams the two leagues with combine to make MLS 1 and MLS 2. Maybe after a couple years when all the teams in both leagues better their players and teams they will implement relegation.

  20. Who said it was going to compete with MLS…besides many European countries in their lower leagues have multiple leagues at the same level. If it is too much, what’s the worst that can happen?

  22. The new NASL definately has the upper-hand on the USL1 right now! All of the best second-tier markets (with the exception of New York) are with the NASL.

    Tampa is flopping like a fish right now…will they stay with NASL or flop back to USL1 again?

    Baltimore is a huge coup for the start-up…great market, with good ownership.

    Minnesota is still in doubt right now.

    But the way I see it, Portland would be better to look at the NASL for their MLS prep season, than playing in a possible third-tier level USL. Rochester and Puerto Rico (possibly New York, Charleston, and Austin too) better take a good hard look at the USL right now.

    What’s next for the NASL? Ajax Orlando (PDL)? Pachuca Pheonix (long rumoured)? Barca-NY (long-rumoured)? They have expressed interest in international clubs coming into their league.

  24. Mixed feelings right now. Could be exciting addition to the game in this country or it could be a total disaster. Not sure i really like bringing back the NASL name. Whatever gets this game to the next level in this country, who cares who does it, how they do it or what name they use.

    Really hope TB Rowdies can get a stadium deal done. The only thing they are needing is the land. they need to stop looking in Pinellas county (don’t make the same mistake the Rays did) get to down town or close to it (Ybor, Channel side district, or even close to the fairgrounds).

  25. ADF Says:
  26. Gulati has a tough decision to make. He’s hoping that NASL or USL will run low on money and have to step down. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t USL have a partnership with youth soccer? NASL and USL are playing chicken. Once the clubs that are on the fence commit, one league will be much stronger. Assuming its NASL the entity that bought USL will sue. Ideally the soccer pyramid would go MLS, NASL, USL, lower USL, semi-pro.
    Most of the clubs with pockets deep enough to afford the MLS expansion fee are doing so, the rest of the proposed NASL ie Minnesota and Atlanta are basically broke. It all comes down to money and unless NASL gets investors it will never get off the ground.

  32. Remember me guys, i said MLS has to rename the league. NASL is a very good name, MLS is not, MLS sounds like MLB. I told you guys MLS has to rebrand too like the league is growing, remember i said MLS can becoome=
    N.A.P.S.= North American Premier Soccer
    N.A.S.L.= North American Soccer League
    N.P.L.= National Premier League
    U.P.L.= United Premier League
    The MLS has to expand, has to change in this moment, because the league is growing and the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA are looking at the soccer growth and they are afraid. So MLS must expand now, keep growing and modernize more and more. Has MLS ever thought og changing name, they should. I say once the league becomes a 20 team, change name or now or tell the people whats coming ahead.

  36. every league changes name in every sport in the world, most of the time because its getting powerful and expanding. MLS will chanage sooner than later, maybe have a contest of mixing MLS with NASL and USL and lets see who comes out with a better name.

  38. How about move Revolution to Baltimore, add tampa bay with miami in the future or orlando. Then add atlanta,a city in north carolina or in south carolina, a city in Tenessee to the MLS. Baltimore sounds good for MLS and the south east adds very different demographics to the MLS. MLS is unique because the U.S. has different cultures, soccer traditions and demographics to pick from. Go to the North East, go South East, Go Pacific West, go Northwest, go South West were MLS needs to go to, Go to the Midwest, go to the East Coast. All different demographics, which make a real soccer specific stadium and advantages. Does anybody know about El Paso, Texas, a very hot hot hot city for MLS and even the Mexican First Division thougth about having a team in our city since we are a border city. We are 8 hours from san antonio, 8 hours from Austin, 10 from DFW, 12 from Houston, 8 from phoenix, 6 from tucson, 12 from san diego, and El Paso fans do travel. 4 hrs from albuquerque and 12 from denver.
