OUTGOING: LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan to Celtic?

Posted by Patrick Beatty Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Could we see more of Landon Donovan in a European jersey?

According to our friends at Tribalfootball.com (click here for the original article and all the details), USMNT and LA Galaxy midfielder/striker could be heading to play for Celtic.

What do you think? Quality club with more playing time or should he aim higher? Help or hurt MLS next season? As a Galaxy fan, what should be done to replace the void of potentially Donovan and Beckham next season? If Donovan goes for a loan, do you think he will come back to MLS?

  2. I think he should be aiming for a midtable team in Spain or a good team in France, not the mediocrity that Scotland has become. A possibility of playing in (and losing in) the Champions League is not really worth the game in game out competition against the likes of Motherwell and St. Mirren in the SPL. The team he would be playing with might be better than LA, but the competition against which he would be playing would be a step down in my opinion.

  6. Although i don’t want to see him go to the SPL, i think he just needs to go to Europe to show what he can do. Then the other teams will call.

Landon just needs out of MLS and into Europe, bottom line.

  8. In the long term it would be a step down. However, it may be a good stepping stone to get more exposure to other clubs in Europe. If he were to go on loan and play well leading up to the WC and then perform in the WC I think he’d have a lot of teams to choose from and wanting his services. Regardless of going on loan, his WC play and performance is what really holds the key to his future. Clubs want to see him perform on a big stage and get the job done. European clubs still don’t respect the MLS and the quality of play and talent.

  10. Trade sunny cali for Scotish weather???? Landon would play well in the Spanish league where the climate is much like southern cal… Not sure how much he would improve in Celtic… (besides celtic and rangers, the quality of the other teams is not the same)
the spanish La Liga would definitely challenge him every week.

  12. If he would like full use of both legs for the World Cup I would opt out of Scottish Football. He should go to a middle to bottom of the table team in Spain, France or Italy that needs an attacking midfielder badly on loan and get as much playing time as possible prior to the World Cup. After the World Cup if he performs well he will get a great offer from multiple European clubs and if he doesn’t he will stay in the MLS and live a comfortable life.

  14. I seldom to never agree with Alexi Lalas but on Sunday night after the battle at the Depot he did make a good point. Wherever Landon goes or doesn’t go the American soccer public won’t be satisfied.

  18. SPL would be step up versus MLS in compensation and exposure, if not (non-UEFA) competition…I think it makes sense for someone who’s struggled to latch onto a Bundesliga side.

That’s IF he goes…not saying he should. Dan’s got a fair point about Donovan’s Cali fixation, too.

  20. Arteta is having injury problems. I can see Howard putting in a good word for Donovan at Everton. Donovan would be a solid RM in the EPL.

the last thing we need is another small, speedy ,and skilled american getting hacked to pieces in Scotland.

its amazing how far the Dutch league has fallen. No one even speaks of it anymore. Ajax,or PSV would be good for him too

  26. Step up from MLS!!! He’ll play in Europe too (CL next season me thinks/hope). A good move for sure. He wore the Hoops as a kid in youth footy too. I would love to see Landon at The Bhoys! GO ON CELTIC!!!

  28. *shrug* I think it depends on wheather or not Celtic and Rangers join the EPL. There is some serious talk over here about something being tabled about a two tiered primier. Harry Redknapp came out today in definate support in the Dailey Record. If they do it’s an obvious step up if not then a horizontal step most likely for exposing hmself to more euro teams.

  30. Ummmm…it seems like this is the 4th story I’ve read in the last few months about him going to another league.

I would like to see him in the EPL. Perhaps with Everton or even Fulham. But I’ll be satisfied if he stays in the MLS. Why do we still feel like we have to prove to the world how good he is? Let him prove it in the next World Cup, as he did in 2002.

  36. hed be better off staying in MLS outside of Rangers and Celtic MLS teams are better. Celtic probably not even as good as the Fire. Celtic is a second rate team in a hack league. They will hurt him with their neandrathal type Scottish game.

  40. Donovan should take the offer. He will get more playing time for Celtic FC. In Spain he would just sit on the bench. Celtic FC has a great tradition and would be a good fit for Donovan. I think the SPL is his level of play. To say he belongs in a higher quality league is to say he belongs sitting on the bench.

  42. i say, loan him out (Celtic sounds fine), but don’t get rid of him completely. mls needs donovan. he’s huuge for the mls. the guy even does interviews in spanish on the spanish networks!

  44. As a Celtic Supporter this would be a fantastic signing for Celtic. As a fan of the US’s progression in the sport, I don’t think this would be the best move he could take over the off season. American’s haven’t done well in Scotland and let’s face it the league has gone down the EPL is taking in all the money and big clubs like Celtic and gers are just falling behind financially trying to keep up.

Donovan belongs at a big club. Period.

  50. it would make sense that they would want him. speed and better than beasley and edu (on the rangers), who have both done pretty well at times against celtic.

and even if its not that much of a step up in competition, he could easily succeed playing on celtic against the likes of that league. other european teams would definitely take notice
