INCOMING: Jorge Campos To Be FC Dallas Technical Director?

Posted by Patrick Beatty Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Jorge Campos’ head may explode if he gets the less colorful role as a member of the front office than on the pitch.

According to Jason Davis at MatchfitUSA.com (click here for the original article and all the details), legendary Mexican goalkeeper and former LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire player Jorge Campos is in talks with FC Dallas for the new Technical Director position.

What do you think? Great to have a former Mexican legend and MLS player in the front office or does he have enough experience to be able to help FC Dallas effectively improve? Could Jorge Campos in the front office bring more hispanic players to FC Dallas and/or improve the front office situation in general or will he have insufficient power to do so?

  2. Why not. Jorge Campos was an excellent keeper for his size. He has MLS experience and has always been involved with the game off the field. I think he would be a positive influence at least for the Mexican fans and maybe he could bring in some decent players south of the border for Dallas. Either way, Dallas needs personality and Campos certainly has some flair.

  4. Oh. My. God.

    Seriously?! Is he even QUALIFIED?

The hits just keep on coming for FCD fans…

  6. Great to see another team making worse front office decisions than my Quakes.

  8. I understand you want a Mexican but couldn’t you find one with front office experience?

  10. If Dallas is hiring Campos to bring in more Mexican or Mexican-
American fans, they’re making a big mistake. The Galaxy tried using him (and Carlos Hermosillo and Luis Hernandez) to do that. All three failed. The only strong ethnic base that the Galaxy had consisted of Central American fans because of Mauricio Cienfuegos and Carlos Ruiz.

Besides, if Campos is going to be the TD, then he will be in charge of player development and youth squads. What experience does he have? Did anybody ask Hyndman’s opinion? My gut tells me that these two won’t be able to get along, and Dallas will just be making more problems.

  12. It would be a big mistake. Whether you believe in SH or not, he needs a TD that will be willing to work hand in hand with him. Hyndman has created a new atmosphere and brought in the right players. In my opinion, Campos lacks the experience to be technical director (dead weight).

Bringing in Mexican players is an excellent idea(I would like to see more players come to MLS), but do the Hoops have the Salary Cap space to pay their higher salaries? To make room for incoming talent, they would have to probably dismiss Van De Berg whose salary is above 300k.

Center back, forward, and keeper will be high on SH’s wish list.

  14. Wow… might as well bring in Alexi Lalas if things are getting to that point…

  16. RevsFan, as someone who has seen Alexi LaLaLand’s debacle as Galaxy GM, let me just say that no situation would warrant bringing him in, under any circumstances. The only thing that LaLaLand needs to complete his clown costume for Halloween is makeup.

  18. I think RevsFan was being sarcastic. Besides, either is a turd unpolishable.

Maybe they need to take a few pages out of the NBA handbook. If it’s all about race, the NBA markets a “black & international” league to a majority-white audience.

I suspect that isn’t the deal here. If you want to get the hispanic market, get them futbol they will enjoy. Have the food, the beer, and a multi-language announcement system. Or don’t. But don’t pretend that a bunch of Mexicans are going to buy tickets because one of their former heroes are in a press box somewhere. That’s absurd.
