INCOMING: Lee Nguyen to MLS?

Posted by Patrick Beatty Thursday, October 29th, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Could he be hustling his way back to the US…and MLS?

According to the inimititable Buzz Carrick over at the 3rd Degree (click here for the original article and all the details), 23 year old former US National team pool midfielder/forward is training with FC Dallas.

Could he be coming back to MLS or is he just keeping in shape while visiting his home state? Excited to see him possibly in the league or is his technical style not suited to MLS? A good sign if young US players are coming back to play in MLS or is it a sign that they can’t handle the bigger leagues and aren’t developing?

  6. He’d be an allocation pick, so FCD would have to trade to get up to #1 on the allocation list.

  10. he went to a vietnamese club a year ago after randers in denmark b/c vietnam is his heritage, he played out of his mind there and was invited to a 3 month trial with arsenal by wenger b/c that vietnamese team is a feeder team of arsenal…..he is probably trying to find more competition since the v-league is so easy

and to answer your question MLSR, he is coming from a league that he just kicked ass in so i definately wouldnt say he cant handle it and i DEFINATELY wouldnt categorize the vietnamese league above MLS

anyways, philadelphia,LA, or chicago should try him…..Dallas will try and they have a good chance of getting him, but i cant see why they would want him with the centre mid depth they already have

  12. I think the Vietnamese club offered A LOT of money to him to play. He is a good player with speed reminds me of charlie davies before he started to put it together. Talent and potential but never quite sure if he’s going to find it.

  18. Ive been a big Lee Nguyen fan since he is the only asian american in the Nats pool. If only Guus Hiddink didnt leave PSV Eindenhoven so early then we would have had a more finished product in Lee.He wasnt really getting paid that much in Vietnam (like $250-300K base salary) but if you know the vietnamese, things written on paper dont mean squat so im sure there were other things “under the table”. He flat out dominated that league (13 total goals, 16 assists in 24 appearances). If Wenger was interested in him it must mean alot and how he rates him granted arsenal didnt offer him a contract but still, it is indeed an honor. I would be stoked if MLS (most preferbly the quakes) signs him but he is at the mercy of the allocation process. Does anyone know the allocation standings?

  20. never mind, i just realized that the allocation order resets after every season. So, it would look like this (barring any trades)

    1) Philly
    2) New York
    3) Earthquakes
    4) KC
    5) Dallas
    6) Toronto
    7) DC
    8) Colorado
9-15) based on how they do in playoffs

  30. Asian American footballers (mono- and multiracial a.k.a. “hapas”)

the GOOD: Lee Nguyen, Brian Ching, Liz Fair, Tiffany Roberts, Alex Yi

the BAD: Duke Hashimoto, Natasha Kai, James Riley

the UGLY: Steve Shak, Ryan Caugherty

P.S. – Someone should do some research on current multiracial Asian footballers from South and Central America, and the Caribbean (e.g. Gonzalo Choy Gonzalez, Paulo Nagamura, Mark Chung, Deco)
