OUTGOING: Jeff Cunningham of FC Dallas to Reading?

Posted by Patrick Beatty Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 1:58 pm

This man could sidestep the 2010 MLS season altogether and head to England!

According to Martin Rogers at Yahoo Sports (click here for the original article and all the details), English Championship side, Reading, are interested in acquiring 33 year old FC Dallas striker, Jeff Cunningham, to help boost their offense. Apparently, they want him in the January transfer window.

What do you think? Should Cunningham go to Reading ro stay in MLS? Would he get playing time or would it not matter if they money is good? Good or bad thing that MLS Golden Boot contenders are getting scooped up by foreign clubs? If Cunningham leaves, who will step up on FC Dallas for the offense or who could they get to replace him?

  2. ya i heard about this last night. I think he should take it, it’s his last chance abroad, an maybe he can have a look with bob bradley.

  4. i think he should go only if he is guaranteed playing time. he should ask if they can guarentee it then make his desicion.

  6. he should stay. all our best mls players leave — this sucks for the league. it sucks even more for fans who start following a team b/c of a certain player or who enjoy watching a certain player play. i started watching fc dallas games b/c of cunningham. after he leaves, i’m not sure i’ll still be interested in watching fc dallas games (unless of course they play against my fav team — the red bulls — or another team i enjoy watching).

i say pay him more and keep him here.

  8. its a great opportunity, but in the end they’ll probably not play him often if at all. Its just a waste. He should stay in MLS where he can consistently play.

  10. At his age, if he gets a good contract offer, he should take it. He won’t have many years left and he’d be stupid to stay in MLS and get underpaid. Not that I want to see him go, but he’s gotta look after his bottom line.

  12. If anything, this will result in even less of a look from Bradley as he will find himself riding the Reading bench. He should stay, Dallas appreciates and respects him finally.

  16. If Reading can guarantee that he will see some action on the pitch, then he should go for it. He could remain in shape and if Bradley has any sense, will give him a long look for a WC roster spot since we now need another striking option with some speed to replace Davies. Brian Ching and Conor Casey are not the options. Bring Ching is a joke and could be a detriment with the way he easily picks up red cards in MLS. God speed to ya, Jeff Cunningham.

  18. if BB is planning on calling him up into the U.S. roster then this would be good for him because even though i believe the skill in MLS and the Championship is equal, the training and managing aspect of the game is much better in the championship…..BUT if BB doesnt plan on calling him up then whatever man, just stay

Reading is looking for a striker with speed TO START, so obviously he is being looked upon as a starter for Reading….they need a speedy striker to compliment some of there current strikers and they have been looking for one so…very good chance for Jeff.

  20. jhg and neo both make good points…Cunningham’s gotta balance playing time and his bottom line. Reading’s a MUCH bigger step up if they qualify for promotion this year, too!

It’s not impressive that an MLS Golden Boot contender is getting an offer to play in the Championship…but it IS impressive that he’s getting one at 33!

Sucks for Dallas though…their fans anyway, even if the FO deserves what they get for consistently underpaying the star players they’ve got!

  22. like someone else said…he’ll be foolish not to jump on this…even if its a 1 year deal.

i dont care about age…the WC should be about a nation’s best 23 at that given momment. Hopefully he keeps the hot streak going across the pond

  23. Aces McGee Says:
  24. He’s old… sell him and cash in. He can come back in a couple years and ride a bench for some MLS team with late minute appearances. He didn’t do crap lately until this year so if some Championship League team wants to waste their money, take it.

  26. He should go, and it’s a good thing for the league.

Having players like Cunningham use MLS as a jumping-point to Europe makes our league more attractive for the Monteros and Hurtados of the world.

MLS players having success in other places is how we build our reputation, and pick up the next young, exciting player.
