REPORT: Seattle Sounders Kasey Keller thinks 2010 won’t be the end

Is Keller playing GK at over 40 too much of stretch, not according to Keller!

According to the Associated Press, Kasey Keller may stay in the Emerald City up to 2011 to see the Northwestern rivals enter the league.

As he nears the end of his first season in Major League Soccer, Seattle Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller thinks he’s got enough left to play beyond the initial two-year contract he signed with the Sounders.

Keller, the former U.S. national team keeper, has hinted he would like to still be playing for the Sounders when expansion teams in Portland and Vancouver are expected to join the MLS in 2011. After Seattle’s practice on Tuesday, Keller said he would be surprised if he still wasn’t in goal when the 2011 season starts.

Keller signed a two-year deal with Seattle in August 2008 after more than a decade playing in the top leagues in Europe. The most capped goalkeeper in U.S. national team history will turn 40 in late November.

What do you think? Happy to see Keller between the pipes or do you think that maybe a younger keeper should be in goal? How do you rate the old man’s performance this year? What keepers would you like to see succeed him? If he stays in Seattle that long, will you ever see Hahnemann play for Seattle? Any changes that you want to see at Seattle?

  2. Not only is he “not broken down,” he’s clearly been one of the very best keepers in MLS. There’s a reason he started the All-Star Team.

You can’t let a keeper that good walk, regardless of age.

  4. Oh, and Pat Onstad is almost a year older than Keller and still a damn good keeper.

  6. Plus his leadership on and off the field more than makes up for what little he may have lost as a keeper. Still plenty good enough for the MLS

  8. No brainer. Keep him. I guarantee Keller will be calling it quits before his game drops. Right now, it’s hard to argue with his performance.

  12. i’m with michael – keller (along with onstad) are in the top 5 keepers of the MLS. no reason to retire when you can still play at this high of a level.
