CONFIRMED: Thierry Henry to RBNY Rumor Has Legs – Meetings Took Place Last Month

Posted by mlsrumors Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

It should be noted that Sky Sports has added a bit more intrigue to the Henry to Red Bull New York rumors, even while some other American soccer bloggers dismissed them. One prominent one going so far as to say this about it yesterday:

Everybody’s favorite international star-to-MLS rumor re-appeared over the weekend, and while nothing has really changed with regard to the long-discussed potential THierry Henry to New York Red Bull rumor, it still managed to resurface and create a little more buzz.

In short, the story is a weak one, and while the author is actually one of the Mail’s main soccer writers, he is also someone who doesn’t exactly specialize in transfer speculation.

Joe Bernstein’s four biggest transfer-related stories (make that his only transfer-related stories) from the summer to now were the following: Rafael van Der Vaart to Arsenal, Sergio Aguero to Manchester United, Ashley Young to Tottenham and Peter Crouch to Sunderland OR Fulham. No, that’s not exactly a good success percentage.

Well now SkySports News is reporting the following regarding a meeting which took place last month between the two parties according to Manchester City boss Mark Hughes:

“And regarding a swap deal (with Thierry Henry) – no, it’s not going to happen either. I’ve got the impression that Henry is leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.

“There were meetings last month between his representatives and New York Red Bulls and I’ve got the impression that after the World Cup he is going to go to the MLS.”

Moral of the story… Don’t give much weight to people who keep “statistics” on rumors. Like it or not rumors are a part of the game and reporting them is what keeps people interested even if not all of them come to fruition. Most of the world gets that. Most of the world understands that a rumor may or may not be something that actually occurs. So why is that so hard to grasp for some people in MLS?

  2. he dont look so good sitting on the field like that. If it is true, look for a deal in January similar to DB’s 6-months-in-advance-of-playing type scheme.

  10. While Thierry Henry rumors may only be fabrication, it is still fun to talk about the possiblities for MLS to grow… The league and the sport have a lot of momentum right now… Going into World Cup 2010 and three new teams joining in the next two years, it can only get bigger.

  14. blog bickering… ugh. most people read both MLSR and the blogger who rhymes with The Hives. I hate when both of you have to berate one another.. whatever, still an insightful post, as a RBNY fan, I’m excited.

  16. The best part about the leagues here in America is the parity. RBNY deserves a spark like TH playing there, I for one am happy for them. I hope the Quakes get someone half as good as him sometime soon to replace Huckerby.

  18. Something interesting from that other blog you quoted is that it appears that “the blogger that rhymes with Hives” has unknowingly confirmed one of your rumors about the Designated Players not counting towards the salary cap.

    Here was your story:

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/3739/2009/09/report-4million-salary-cap-exempt-designated-players-higher-minimum-salary-discussed-for-2010/

And here was his response to someone in the comments section:

    “A.S. said…

First things first – is Angel definately not going to be resigned? Because obviously if they resign Angel, there’s no way they could also take on Henry.

(SBI-And why not? Even under the current rules they can fit two DPs on their books (Pietravallo and Rojas contracts alone would cover the second DP slot). That said, MLS is rumored to be considering not counting DP slots against the cap, which would make it even more likely the Red Bulls sign two DPs.)”

By the way, bloggers who refer to themselves in the third person (Goof and Hives) suck and have big overinflated egos.

  24. I’m not sure if you take two low-percentage rumors and put them together that it makes the new rumor more or less likely to play out, but you have one rumor about Barcelona coming into MLS in some form, (maybe buying out Red Bull), and another rumor about a huge player of theirs, still under contract, coming to Red Bull, with no mention of what Baraca would get in return. Coincidence?

  28. I can’t wait. Henry will be great for this league and for NYRB. It will definitely happen sometime after the world cup.
