REPORT: USA Supporters to Stand Up For Charlie Davies

Posted by mlsrumors Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

We are re-posting the following which originally appeared over at soccer blog, Shinguard.

We at MLSR had the fortune of interviewing Davies just prior to the USA’s opening Gold Cup match this past summer. All of us here at MLS Rumors have sent on our well wishes to Davies.

And you can too by emailing him at: charliedavies9@yahoo.com.

If you have ever been through any type of major surgery you know that one can never have too many “get well soon” cards so drop “Chuck Deezy” a line, a rhyme or two. Humor can often be good medicine.

It has even made the AP wire:

WASHINGTON — Fans of the U.S. national team planned to show their support Wednesday night for forward Charlie Davies, following an automobile accident that has jeopardized his soccer career.

The Baltimore Brigade supporters group encouraged fans to hold up a white card with a black No. 9 — Davies’ jersey number — during the ninth minute of the U.S. team’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

U.S. teammate Jozy Altidore used his Twitter account to urge fans to send e-mails to Davies: “Ok guys u can send ALL your well wishes 2 Charlie, email charliedavies9 at yahoo.com, they r printing all notes and bringing them 2 him! THX”

We support Shin Guard and the USA fans in the action below and we will be streaming the game live:

SG hopes for a speedy and full recovery for the striker whose 21st minute strike (versus Egypt) put the U.S. back on the road to redemption in South Africa just a few months ago.

So in support of our favorite team’s injured teammate, TSG, along with the American Outlaws, is backing the effort for all the fans attending Wednesday’s RFK game to stand and cheer for the full 9th minute of tomorrow’s USA v. Costa Rica match. You can print out this number 9 to hold up for Charlie Davies during the 9th minute.

The idea was inspired by Bryan James.

If you are not at the game, stand-up wherever you are. And (via Twitter) from SamsArmy94: Everyone who is able to – up for tweeting @CharlieDavies9 at the same time (9th minute tonight) tweets of support? Yes, sir!

CD, we hope and know you’ll be up doing the stanky leg in no time…regardless of what docs may or may not say.

From Stu Holden via Twitter: @stuholden22: U can send ALL your well wishes 2 Charlie-email charliedavies9@yahoo.com , they r printing all and bringing them 2 him! THX

Now everyone, STAND UP FOR CHARLIE!

EDIT: We just received the following from Seattle from our good friends at Prost Amerika Soccer:

Gentlemen and Ladies of the media,

I’ve been asked by some Sounders fans to circulate details of a planned salute to Charlie Davies at Seattle’s home game with Dallas on October 24th.

They plan hold up a sign on the ninth minute and the club will be participating by allowing the big screen to be used to show their support.

If any of you could give the demonstration some oxygen, the organisers would be very grateful for your assistance.
