REPORT: Toronto FC Top 30? TFC Discovery List Leaked?

Posted by MLSR Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Who may be coming to Toronto FC? The list which was leaked to us may provide some answers.

Below is a list of 30 players we were emailed by someone wishing to remain anonymous. It is allegedly a list of players who Toronto has discovery claims on or soon will. While some of these players had previously been linked to MLS or Toronto FC others are completely new revelations and some are surprising.

Regarding the list...

They state:

Here is a list of international players which Toronto in the past, currently have, or are planning to file discovery paperwork on with MLS:
  • Shola Ameobi
  • Craig Bellamy
  • Philippe Charles Lucien Christanval
  • Ivan Cordoba
  • Edgar Davids
  • Paul Dickov
  • Stephano Fiore
  • Robbie Fowler
  • Kevin Gall
  • Nuno Gomes
  • Iain Hume
  • Harry Kewell
  • Patrick Kluivert
  • Clodoaldo Paulino de Lima
  • Gaizka Mendieta
  • Liam Miller
  • Kiki Musampa
  • Ruud van Nistelrooy
  • Victor Danilo Pacheco
  • Alessandro Del Piero
  • Joao Pinto
  • Facundo Sava
  • Paul Scholes
  • Marcos Senna
  • Andriy Shevchenko
  • Nolberto Solano
  • Hakan Sukur
  • Manuel Diego Tello
  • Mark Viduka
  • Ross Wallace
Do with it what you will but keep my name and email address anonymous. You did not get this from me. Thanks.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This list is most likely a hoax.

  1. Um, I think there is a cap of 6on the number of Discoveries.

    (E.) DISCOVERY SIGNINGS
Each team has the opportunity to make six (6) discovery signings per season. The last day for discovery player signings is September 15, 2008 - coinciding with the roster freeze date and trade deadline. The six Discovery signings can be used to fill senior roster spots only. If multiple teams claim the same player using a Discovery, the team that filed the claim first will have first rights to the player. Discovery claims expire following each season. If a player was unable to come to terms during the season, the team that first filed the discovery retains the right of first refusal in the event the player is signed.

    30? not so much

  3. Yup. I was just coming to post the same thing that Sounder at Heart said: At most there'd be 18 players on that list (if you assume TFC has used its quota for 2009).

In fact, this looks like a list of all the rumour signings/close calls that we've ever had on TFC forums.

    I call BS.

  5. This should not be posted as a rumor. It's nonsense. At best, it's a wish list of names someone might want to file as MLS Discoveries. It isn't feasible for a 2 year old team to have a list this long.

  6. Looks like a bunch of players that we've supposedly looked at in the past and some that are random to make it "authentic'.
Also i think RSL supposedly has dibs on Van Nistilrooy

  7. Also according to Goff

    Discovery window opens Monday

  9. looks extremely suspicious of being fake.

I'm not a fan of Mo Johnston, but surely nobody could be stupid enough to spend 90% of your discovery spots on guys who can fill 5% of your roster (aka one spot).

    It really doesn't add up.

  11. The only name i have not seen rumored previously is:

    Clodoaldo Paulino de Lima

  13. Fake, and a poor one...

TFC had 10 discovery claims as an expansion team, and, I believe, the regulation six last year. Teams are not permitted to file until 2009, right?
One player they did file on, Huckerby, doesn't appear in the fake list...

  15. Does Toronto have good pie shops? Exactly how many overweight-way-over-the hill-washed-up-EPL players does one team need?

  16. Again, from the league

Discovery claims expire following each season.

It doesn't matter how many they've had in the past years, they get to claim 6.

Seattle gets 10 from the USL, I have yet to read if they get more outside of the US system.

  18. So by the title: Toronto FC Top 30? TFC Discovery List Leaked?,

What you really mean to say is: Here's a bunch of rumours we pulled off some TFC fan forums! Don't we really look silly for doing so?

  19. As a Basque Torontonian, I really hope Gaizka Mendieta comes to T.O.

I give it a 2% chance of ever happening.

  21. It's a fake, but hey, they are supposedly (for real) looking at an English U-21 striker. I'd say that's a step in the right direction.

  23. Give me about half an hour and I'll send you a TFC Discovery wish list, but I wish to remain anonymous. Idiot.

  24. Anonymous Says:
  25. Iain Hume - that's a joke right? He plays in the 3 Division in England. He might be good in that division and for Canada, but to make him a DP...please! Half that list is full of really old players that wouldn't make a difference to the team in any form. Kewell is probably a good buy as is Van Nistelrooy. Hume would be a terrible choice.

  26. Come on, give Barnsley SOME credit! They play in the Championship now!
Anyway, this list is bunk. but TFC better "discover" somebody soon. Not sure if the fans are going to put-up with another season of mediocrity.

  27. Michael Says:
  28. Why don't they put a claim for all the big name European players who may have commented about playing in the MLS or may want to come here before they retire. This list is ridiculous!

  29. Most of you are confusing the number od discovery signings with the number of players that can have discovery claims placed on them.

They are not the same thing.

yes, teams can SIGN six guys, but the protected list is more. I don't rememebr how many more, but I think it's 9.

So, you can keep 9 on the list at any time. If you sign one, you replace it with another.

I think it's also the case that this list goes on indefinitely, thus you could potentially block another team signing a player due to your dicovery claim (think TFC and huckerby).

As for this list, looks like a list of palyers we were linked with over the past two years plus a couple of logical/obvious selections. Who knows if it's true, the most importnant part is not one of these actually signed with TFC.

  30. Anonymous Says:
  31. The discovery list is a joke, teams should be able to sign player in MLS if they can pay them the right money, sorry MLS but we are not EPL.

  32. Anonymous Says:
  33. This entire site is a hoax!

  34. Kewell would be a horrible signing. Out of a 2 or 3 year contract he would play 10 games and be out injured the rest. As for van Nistelrooy, he is arguably still in his prime. His pace has declined, but that was never his game, he is a target guy, and he had 20 goals last season, 33 the year before.

The list seems unlikely to be real, but I would think that some of these guys would consider MLS when no big clubs will take them.
