This was found courtesy of the news feeds from our good friends at Dynamoplanet.com. It looks like a new deal has been reached in San Jose:

SHARKS TO BUY INTO 'QUAKES: The San Jose Sharks are expected to close on the purchase of a 10 to 15 percent stake in the San Jose Earthquakes in early 2009, said Earthquakes owner Lewis Wolff.

The deal, which is a cash deal valued at $2 million to $3 million, will give the Earthquakes the benefit of a partner with years of experience in the San Jose market. The two teams will share databases for fans, cross-promote each other during games and collaborate on marketing strategies, Wolff said.

“It’s a done deal,” he said. “It will help us as we continue to grow.”

Wolff said the Earthquakes plan to select an architecture firm by early next year to design a soccer-specific stadium planned for the market. He plans to spend $40 million to $60 million on the stadium, all of which is private money, and he envisions a super-structure metal stadium with 15,000 seats.

  4. yea, are the quakes gonna get any public funding in addition, because it really isn't worth building a stadium with only 40 million.

Section 8 cheer at Crew Stadium.

15,000? C'mon. 15,000? I thought the league wanted a minimmum of 18,000 (base and ready for expansion)?

  10. good for the quakes but i agree with every on 15000 is to small. maybe the sharks can pitch in an extra 20 mil for and 18000 seater.

  16. 15,000 sounds great. id much rather see a packed sss, then half empty ones like fc frisco and the crapids have.

  18. Nothing wrong with 15,000. Columbus, Colorado and Dallas should've had theirs this size so they might have a chance at sell-outs. Build small, sell out, drive up demand and then expand...

  20. To add to that, KC would be better off building for only 15,000

  22. agreed with the later posters. Casual fans would rather go to a packed 15,000 stadium and take in the sellout atmosphere than to half empty colorado stadium with no atmosphere whatsoever.

  24. If 2-3mil buys 10-15% of the team that means its valued at 20mil total? That doesnt make much sense.

What a pointless comment that brings nothing to the table!! Easy to say when the different levels of Canadian gouvernment just built it for the team for free!! Not every football team has the luxury of getting a free stadium built for them...
