NOTMOVING: Revs to Stay Put According to Chief Operating Officer

Posted by MLSR Friday, December 19, 2008

The more things change for other teams, the more they stay the same for the New England Revolution.

Consider the New England Revolution to CT rumor debunked. At least if you believe the Revolution's COO, Brian Bilello, the Revs are not moving from Gillette stadium any time soon.

In a Q&A session with New England Revolution Fans he had this to say:

Stadium

I think many of you have now seen to study that was released by the city of Somerville related to the Inner Belt area and a possible stadium at that site. As far as an update or a timeline, there isn’t anything hard that I have to share at this time.

This process is not ours, it is the city of Somerville’s, and we will continue to follow their lead in terms of how things will progress. The city and its residents need to determine what is best for Somerville, and if they decide that a soccer stadium is something that they would like to explore further, we will be very enthusiastic to do so.

However, this is not a process that we are going to proactively drive or try to apply pressure to, as we do not feel that is either appropriate or helpful to the city and its residents.

In terms of supporter input, I have said and will reiterate that we will be seeking thoughts and feedback at the appropriate time.

Potential move?

I believe I have seen the rumor that people are inquiring about. I’m not sure where that came from, but I assure you that it has nothing to do with the New England Revolution.

EDITORS NOTE: To refresh your memory, the rumor that Bilello is talking about was this one published here on MLSR. Keep in mind the rumor never mentioned the Revs and Bilello does not discount the rumor but simply says it has nothing to do with the New England Revolution. So the mystery continues...

  4. Can't you just feel the excitement folks? I mean could this reply be anymore dry and clinical.

Standard Revs operating procedure: autopilot. Well, gee, if Somerville wants to build a staium that'd be nice. But we're not going to try to get it done or anything. Nope nope nope. Hands off, that's our policy.

This part just tickles me. Classic Rev FO attitude:

"In terms of supporter input, I have said and will reiterate that we will be seeking thoughts and feedback at the appropriate time."

Lemme translate for you non-Revs fans. "Sit down, shut up, buy a ticket package, and stop asking qustions will you?!"

Yawn and sigh. Biggest off-the-field event in this team's history and the temporary Ocean Spray bog in front of Gillette was treated with more excitement by this management team.

See what we're dealing with folks?

  6. "That stadium is aweful."

    So is your spelling.

I love the crap MLSR spouts at the end about how "we never said it was New England."

No, but New England was the only team that fit the rumor.

  10. why cant they just open up the entire lower bowl....why do they feel like one vacant side of the stadium looks any better? Seems like that supporters group behind the goal is really the only true fans they have. Fuck the Patriots....and their owner,he has no business dealing with real football.

  12. As a neutral, it's disapionting you have a major market like Boston that is being held back by a cheap owner.

They should be pushing multiple areas in / very close to Boston get started on the damn stadium.

On top of that they should be more willing to invest their own money to make it happen.

But no, let's just do nothing or eventually put a stadium way out in the burbs where nobody will notice.

  20. Don't forget their name. They need a new name too. Leave "Revolution" for the next WNBA expansion.

  22. We can only hope they move. Then give Boston - repeat - the CITY of Boston an expansion team. Have em wear green and name em FC Boston. Bam.

  26. yeah, their logo is horrible, their kits are even worse, and they play in a horrible venue for soccer... those tarp covered seats look like garbage. they definately need a new stadium as soon as possible. but i cannot imagine boston without a soccer team. i hate boston teams, but i even admit that boston is one of the top sports markets in the country. the revs, and their fans, deserve better than this garbage. this franchise has a lot of unrealized potential.

  28. Don't change any names of the original teams. Don't be the next RB. Kraft is a great owner...and has consistently produced some of the best players in MLS.

Don't get a DP. Keep the good soccer. All he needs is a new stadium in Somerville. A shirt sponsor would create more stability but it's his decision. He should keep it local like Samuel Adams or something.

  29. I thought I was the only one who thought the Revs name & logo look too "90's"! The teams been "relatively" successful, and deserves a new logo, stadium, and shirts sponsor! Seriously, the team finishes near the top every year, and still now shirt sponsor? How hard can it possibly be to find one?
And that logo...I'm pretty sure if you asked a high school art student from 1994 to design a soccer logo, that's what he/she would come-up with.
The MLS needs a make-over for alot of their teams' shirts and crests. The Crew and Earthquakes can hand-in theirs, too!

  31. Hands off the Crew logo. Its popular in Europe and South America.

  32. Anonymous Says:
  33. The reason the lower bowl isn't fully open for most matches is due to the associated cost of doing so, primarily, opening up additional concessions, paying for additional security, but also... there really isn't a need.

Everything about the Revs from their logo to their kiddie marketing to the oversized NFL stadium with football lines to the Nike "XXtreme" name "Revolution" screams 90s.

Give them another 10 years and they will be considered "throwback"

But seriously I hope they move to Boston ditch the whole Revolution "Americas Team" crap, wear green and white hoops and become Boston FC. I can dream.

  37. Why the fuck have a team that is named after a region. How about you name it after your city. Have a little connection with the community. Boston over New England
    Any thing over Revolution
    new EVERYTHING

I can't even watch them play without being first bored by their image and than depressed because they aren't trying to change.

    Hey, Craft! Fix this shit.

  38. Anonymous Says:
  39. fix KC Wiz too

  40. Anonymous Says:
  41. I hate the Revs. Worst stadium in MLS. Even KC in a minor league baseball stadium is better. and they keep winning so I have to continue watching games in that terrible stadium.

Kraft is in a tough spot getting a new stadium though. Its like the situation in NY, its tough to find the room to build a stadium in the city. Please Sommerville spare the misery of seeing the Revs in Gillette stadium.

I know Kraft is too tight to pay a lease, but how bout the Revs playing at Boston College?

The Revs have played USOC games in New Britain, CT. By keeping their name "New England" they reach out to all soccer fans in the region, not just one city.

    Six states, one team.

  44. KaptPowers Says:
  45. To Mr. "Boston FC"

Please for the love of all that's holy stop repeating your pipe dream every single time anything about the Revs is mentioned. Jesus H. Christ. I say this as a Celtic supporter as well fer Chrissakes. Let it go.

The team name is fine the way it is. What's wrong is the ownership's attitude. Yeah the logo could use a re-tune but hey that's the least of their problems.
