You have to give it to a most excellent blog and a friend of MLSR, The Fighting Talker for scooping the entire MLS blogosphere on this one.
Columbus has one less worry. Defender Chad Marshall, long thought to be headed to Europe is re-signing with the Crew.
Here is an excerpt:
It’s very, very rare when Fighting Talker can actually break news, especially news that Steve (Goff) apparently doesn’t know yet, but my sources close to the situation in Columbus are telling me that Chad Marshall is about to decline that offer from Mainz and accept an extension from the Crew. I don’t yet know the details on the extension, but I’ve been told it’s coming soon.
Crew fans should be able to exhale a bit as it appears their post-title talent stripping has come to an end.

I don't think I believe HE would REJECT an offer from mainz, especially if HE was on trial
Of course he would reject the offer if he got a good deal from Columbus and it turned ot he didn't like Mainz so much.
Just one more example of how MASSIVE Columbus Crew is.
MASSIVE CREW!
WOOOO HOOOOOO!!!! SCORECARD!!!!
I root for the acquisition/re-signing of all quality players to MLS, regardless of team.
All fans of MLS should be glad that the defender of the year isn't leaving to play for a side in Germany that most of us have never even heard of.
Nice "scoop", except this has been widely reported this morning.
MLS quality is sh*t, with Subotic soon to stab us in the back and play for Serbia, we need young central defender propects like Chad in bigger leagues playing against better competition, and not wasting away in that dump people call columbus and defending against the same old 30+yr old fwds.

Really? Where?
MLS quality may be S!@# but thats to be expected from this young league. I believe it would be better for our national team in the long run if we retain our youth talents here in the US rather than letting them go to secondary divisions from france, spain, england or leagues like belgium, denmark, sweden, etc. Just think about it for a second. If we retain them, the quality of the league would vastly increase thus allowing the top clubs around the world to take notice that can outcompete any Scandinavian teams
^
That's where you're wrong, keeping all our best US nat players here will be better for the national team? Are you kidding.
It's unrealistic and wrong to want to keep our young prospects here playing against a bunch of euro and latin american has beens.
goof jon idiot, your national team career is over while arkursts has just begun. you are now behingdermit, parkhust, califf, and conread and will never get called up for an important game. THe team he was going to developed a player you might have heard of... his name is neven subotic and he played their just last year. plus mainz is in first place in bthe B2 and has a good chance of playing in the bundeliga next year whihc everyone in the world knows is a million times better than the mls. No one can argue that who has ever watched soccer before. well your career is over good luck being the next mike petke.
As a Crew fan, I love having him back. As a fan of the MLS, it is great that we are retaining great players. As a US National team fan, I am excited that some of the prospects for the team are staying close to home. It means that some of these guys will be on the same side which will be good for team unity and knowledge of how to play with one another on the pitch. Those who play in other countries are are usually the tops that we have to offer. If they are chosing to stay over here, it could only improve the MLS and therefore improve the quality of those who we pick to play on our National team. I am not saying that we will be in the World Cup final next time or even the time after. But I think that as a young soccer nation we will start to improve on the quality of play the more we keep quality players in our system.
This league will never improve if all of our good young talent plays overseas.
We need to get to the point where our young players aren't leaving MLS to play for second rate Euro teams/leagues.
Is this good for the national team? Not sure. But there is no question it is good for MLS.
it wont be good for teamunity because the mls players never play for the national team. alll teh starters play in europe. it is good for the mls for him to stay but bad for the national tewam. staying int he mls does nothing for team unity, team unity is when gooch bocaq dolo and pearce ou rstarting backline who no one sle is gonna break through is whern they play in camp. it builds unity if marshall went to europe and learned from better european coaches so he could play at a startrs level.
Considering GOFF'S ON FREAKING VACATION, feel free to use just one hand to pat yourself on the back.
Some of you are really delusional. Our national team will improve if we keep our guys in the MLS? What drugs are you smoking.
Our players need to be exposed to all different types of style of play and to better quality of play. Playing in MLS is not achieving that. There is nothing wrong with playing for a BundesligaII side which has a good chance at being promoted.
Top Bundesliga scouts scourge this league for young talent to bring up (ex: Subotic) It's much harder to get noticed in what the world considers a retirement league than what you call a second rate euro league.
All our top young talent needs to go to play in Europe.
Marshall of course likes Columbus better. There is a good morale and repore in the locker room between the players and in Columbus there really isn't a weak player at any position on the field. The players love playing for Columbus. I don't think Columbus with the team it has now would do that bad in Bundesliga 2 as well.
Most of the other teams in MLS would get spanked but the top 15 or 16 players on Columbus are just unmatched in the rest of the league, that's why they made it look easy the second half of last year and will do so again this year.
Glad Marshall is back. Basically the Crew has 10 out of it's 11 back, only missing Brad Evans, which is fine because I rate Moffat and Ekpo and Noonan just as high, if not higher. And, with the losing of the reserve league along with Evans 50 K they should be able to sign one or two more players whenever they wish in the offseason window.
I also think Marshall is looking for a better deal then Mainz. Another good year or two in MLS and he should be able to get a better deal with a better English, Spanish, Italian, or German team. Not sure struggling in a relegation battling team next year will really help him.
