INCOMING: Carles Puyol to Miami FCB?

Posted by MLSR Friday, December 19, 2008

Ok excuse us for a rumor of a player coming to a team that officially at least does not exist but riddle us this for a moment: If there was any doubt whether Barcelona's expansion bid was in question, don't you think they'd tone down the big names connected with the club?

The latest big name is a defender. Carles Puyol.

Thanks to a loyal MLSR reader for the following which appeared on Spanish language news site Diario Las Americas.

The Barcelona defender Carles Puyol of Spain, aged 30, could become the designated player, if finally, the Board of Directors approves the MLS to Miami as a new football franchise in the U.S. after the 2010 season.

Article in the Diario Las America.

Miami has one foot inside the MLS. And while waiting for a positive response from the Board of Directors of American football, the Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure ahead of Diario Las Americas that the defender Carles Puyol and the striker Thierry Henry will emerge as the two leading candidates to fill the designated player.

Claure, in a lengthy conversation with Diario Las America said that at any moment the League could decide on the return of MLS to Miami with a singular franchise that would have to Barcelona of Spain and to the Claure as main partners.

"We do not want to raise false expectations among the fans ... Not at this time is Lionel Messi, or (Samuel) Eto'o, but instead we are almost certain that Henry-Puyol or one or the other, could take its place of franchise player, "said Claure.

Marcelo, in a bold partnership with the Barsa of Spain, is confident that the response from fans in South Florida will guarantee the success of a team that intends to launch its foray into the league as soon as the season in 2010.

"It is not an imposition to the league, just because it is the Barcelona of Spain ... In fact our passion does not allow us to wait beyond that date, "said Claure and added," the 14 team owners are excited about our project and we all have to offer the best entertainment. "

Marcelo, owner of the club Bolivar of his native country, said that once the Board of Directors approves the MLS franchise, you would announce an international competition to determine the name, emblem and colors of a brand new team, which became the first expansion Overall a team such as Barcelona, with participation in another league.

  8. If the worse that can be said about Miami FCB is that they are a conduit to Barcelona in spain for promising young Americans and international players in MLS while bringing in seasoned pros with name recognition then I hope this goes through ASAP.

I disagree with this statement. I think they're trying to keep drumming up news for their potential team by throwing out names of current Barca players that could potentially (but not probably) move over to the Miami team.

Yeh because sending promising young USA players to a Barca academy before they are over coached and making MLS a viable path to Europe for South American players would really set soccer in the USA back 50 years. (sarcasm)

  32. I love how all these pansies are crying about Miami being a farm club for one of the best teams in the world and crying about getting sent their "old" players.

This the same league that is a farm league for Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and boasts mature(NOT old) players like Blanco, Beckham, Schelotto, McBride.

Yeah you're right guys Puyol and Henry are not in their class, and we must only accept a team in miami if it becomes a viable feeder to 3rd rate leagues instead of one of the best teams in the world.

    Makes perfect sense, thank you.

  46. Never Puyol. He's a Catalan who's been with Barca since he was 17 and has stated numerous times over the years that nothing would make him leave Barcelona. I can see Marquez coming back to North America,or even Henry but Barca will not send their captain and best defender to Miami in a year and a half.

keep hating, cause you know that the league, and all of concacaf for that matter, will belong to miami very shortly.

MLS the Alzheimer's unit of professional soccer.

  73. Ian Says:
  74. You Barca haters are fools, especially those who think 30 years old is a potential retiree.

Between the ages of 28 and 32 most players in most leagues are in their prime - you forget about the mental maturation and experience factor.

Preki played for a full ten years after your stupid "retiree" age of 30 and dominated with his mind, touch and positioning.

We need more players with global credentials in the league to help develop young American talent by serving as examples.

The more you guys hate and bitch and whine, the more the Barca fans push for a team in Miami. Your efforts will only ensure the success of the team, fools.

I can't wait until opening day in Miami. I'll be able to hear you bitches scream from the East Coast all the way to my house in L.A.
