Miami is a lock? Maybe, maybe not. With such definitive statements coming from some quarters we at MLSR decided to look for any evidence that there has been a decision made.
Riddle us this for a moment...
If you have gone through pains to keep a trademark alive many years after the team folded, perhaps in hopes of a return to the Miami market, then why would you suddenly cancel it when a major player like Barcelona is interested in joining the league in that market?
Answer: You wouldn't, unless you KNEW that Miami was going to rejoin the league under a new name and that that name for the Miami club most certainly would have nothing to do with the old Miami Fusion moniker. More than that, such changes were made in August.
Here is the history of the Miami Fusion trademark. We have highlighted the recent change in red.
With statements from the CEO of the potential team and this evidence from the US Patent and Trademark database we are very confident that Miami is close to being announced as a 2011 expansion city.

Now imagine this scenario: Miami FCB is approved by the league and the USL club known as Miami FC decides to become Miami Fusion FC.....It would be completely their right to do so since MLS abandoned and canceled all trademarks.
We saw a similar process with the USL Seattle Sounders prior to the "Save the Sounders" backlash and winning write-in choice.
EDITORS NOTE:
What is notable about the August 25th date?
FC Barcelona has been sniffing around MLS for some time. Well before the mainstream press was all over the story in September the earliest report we published regarding Barca and Miami was published in May of this year, and the team themselves were sighted on Wall Street in New York City, home to MLS Headquarters on August 6th, of this year. The following day we published yet another Barca Miami rumor over two weeks before the Miami Fusion trademark was cancelled...

Maybe they realized that fusion is a ridiculous name after all these years
Transfer rumors about players are great but in my opinion stuff like THIS is what sets you apart from other sites and keeps bringing me back.
Its like you're the "Smoking Gun" of MLS.
I'm clickin the top banners and I salute you for the great work here.
You didn't at all mention the timing of the Barcelona emergence.
Fact is the August 25th date and the Barca entry don't concide at all.
Barcelona only entered the scene in late September and the stadium situation hadn't been sorted at that point. Would MLS abandon a patent for this reason before Barca even submitted their bid in Mid October. That would just be dumb.
Anyway, Garber is on record this week saying that he has concerns about Miami fan support and FIU stadium, while Claure battles with tax loopholes to make his plan work.
So thanks for digging, but there is absolutely nothing to this Trademark link.
Fusion just sucks as a name.
See the editors note above. Barca Miami has been in the works since May at least.
Vamos FC Miami we are ready to see some MLS in Miami.
MLS cancelled because Miami will be one of the expansion team.
Yes Miami we are ready for MLS.
Fan from Dallas, TX
Gaber will not turn down Miami. It is a done deal.
Goodbye Miam Fusion. Hello Miami FCB.
Will the "B" in FCB stand for B-squad?
Yeah!!! Miami is a barca Puppet! Let’s all rejoice at the fact that Miami will have no heritage! Yeah another chivas suck ass team! Yeah MLS will get second hand players! The good players will be sent to Barca!
Good times!
Sure Miami deserves a team! If I lived in Miami I would want the team to be a part of the neighborhood. Sure foreign investors can own the team but come on people demand a team you can respect. Show some pride and heritage. At least Miami fusion was original and was all about Miami and not a foreign team / league.
^^^
"Show some pride and heritage"
LMAO....you mean like RedBull, Chivas USA, Dynamo, DC United, Real Salt Lake.
Yeah total unique pride and heritage in half the league.
It's a rap haters, done deal, and you can suck it =D
Maybe there was some foreshadowing going on with the name fusion to begin with? Merriam's defines "fusion" as: a union by or as if by melting: as a: a merging of diverse, distinct, or separate elements into a unified whole b: a political partnership : coalition.
I find it kind of crazy that years later that MLS will merge with Barcelona to form a team in Miami. It would make sense to call the team Barca Fusion in light of what's going on.
Well, maybe Bumpy Pitch can now make Miami Fusion T-shirts as part of their next line. I would buy one, the Fusion's last year of existence was some of the most entertaining soccer that I've ever seen in MLS.

What heritage is that? Miami has no history or heritage in the sport as far as most people are concerned aroun here. Miami Fusion had nothing to do with Miami, they played in Ft Lauderdale for soccer moms. Miami FC drew flies even though Traffic Sports who run the COPA LIBERTADORES and COPA SUDAMERICANA own them.
No one would care about a team called Miami Fusion but everyone loves the heritage and history of Barca.
If we can share in that then we will be happy. Fuk all you haterz.
DEATH TO MIAMI AND BARCA!
Signed:
DC United
Dumb ass,
You made my point!
If you want to be barca why not be a barca fan. If your a Miami fan be a Miami fan. Don't be a sell out wanna be!
Barca sucks ass and Miami will be a puppet!
I don't hate Miami or even the fans. I just cant understand why you are so happy to be barca jr's.
dc? baaah... great season you guys had last year. in two years we're gonna enjoy fucking you up on a regular basis.
VAMOS MIAMI!
D C United we can't wait to play you in 2010. We will see you at the "Cage".
DEATH TO DC UNITE!!!
LOVE ALL THE HATE FOR MIAMI. IT IS ONLY JEALOUSY.
MIAMI ULTRAS ARE READY.
VAMOS MIAMI 2010.
well since there are so many sell-outs in miami with no pride, the city should change their name to Barcelona.
I will agree with the fact that Miami played some of the best soccer the MLS has seen there last year. It was a shame they did not win the Cup that year.
Portland deserves a team. I really don't care who else gets the 2nd bid.
MLS didn't cancel the mark, the government did. I'm pretty sure MLS had decided not to renew and the USPTO finally got around finalizing the cancellation.
