STADIUMS: Red Bull Arena Selected As Site For 2009 MLS Cup?

Posted by MLSR Wednesday, November 12, 2008

As thoughts turn to this year's MLS Cup final. Our thoughts have wondered who would be announced as the 2009 host. Apparently an insider from the Big Apple knows and has sent along the following email:

Big fan of the site here.

I found out recently that it is almost a certainty that Red Bull Arena has been chosen as the site of the 2009 MLS Cup. More than that, MLS plans to showcase the new stadium with a host of Hollywood and New York celebrities at the events around the cup. This will be to build on the hype from the grand opening earlier in the year and in a run up to a World Cup year. You can expect that MLS Entertainment will use every resource it has on this. Anyway, just thought I'd pass that along, take a look at the camera of the work site if you haven't already. They look to be ahead of schedule. Thanks and please keep my name/email anonymous.

What would you think of MLS Cup at Red Bull Arena?

  4. If it comes down to a late set piece restart for the home team, will they or won't they allow the snow blower to clear a proper footing path at the spot of the kick?

  6. I hate putting the MLS Cup in SSS's. I was ath the07 cup in DC, and they got 38,000 fans. these 20-25 thousand seat stadiums are too small.

  8. RFK still looked desolate last year with 38,000. Pizza Hut Park with 20,000 the year before had more atmosphere and intensity.

BTW, when is Red Bull Arena scheduled to be done?

  10. that is BS. with large contingents from 3 supporters groups, there was plenty of atmosphere.

and the reason there was so much atmosphere at the PHP is because it was 90% dynamo fans. if that's what you want, than lets do away with the neutral site idea all together.

  12. The All Star game in 10' makes a lot more sense.

  14. After 9/11 the NFL talked about having the Super Bowl in New York but I think it was more of a PR move. They realized the impractically of having a showcase event in winter weather.

  18. I think the MLS Cup should permanently be there. best stadium, best location. no brainer.

  20. All games should be played in a SSS, including the final.

Atmosphere and intensity is preferred over a half-empty stadium which is dedicated to throwball.

I suppose football lines on the field are preferred as well. Come on now.

  26. Too cold? Too much snow? BS!! Its the championship game...people are going to come out!! Plus has everyone forgotten that the stadium will be fully enclosed, keeping much of the wind and snow away from the fans (unlike Giant Stadium or RFK). Sack up people. It's still november!!

  28. I hope it'll be finished in time! Still, New Jersey in winter? Not as welcoming (warm) as Dallas, but what the hell. I'll go.

  30. Fully enclosed with the right field maintenance staff on board with the project i don't see why New York wouldn't be successful in '09.

Although, I don't think RSL will be very happy with building a new stadium and not getting any major events from the MLS.
