News "down under" is abuzz about the prospect of a former Brazilian A-League hero and current DC United standout returning to the land of Kiwis, albeit temporarily.

According to this report...

Phoenix announce Fred coup

Friday, November 14, 2008

One of the A-League’s best-ever players is returning to the
competition, with confirmation that Wellington Phoenix have secured the
services of Brazilian star Fred as a guest player.

Fred is available to play six matches for the Phoenix, starting with the Round
12 clash with Newcastle Jets at Westpac Stadium on November 23 - before
facing his former side in Round 13.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder was the driving force behind Melbourne Victory’s Championship-winning side in 2006/07, playing 20 matches and scoring
four goals and had a hand in five of the Victory’s six goals in their
6-0 Grand Final win against Adelaide United last year.

Following his debut season in the A-League, Fred signed with Major League Soccer
club DC United, where he continues to showcase his stellar talents.

“It’s confirmation that the Phoenix is here for the long haul. Given the
professional approach we have taken from day one, the club’s profile
and reputation continues to go from strength to strength
internationally, and that’s why we have been able to sign a player the
likes of Fred," Phoenix chairman and owner Terry Serepisos said.

EDIT: This morning Behind The Badge, the official blog of DC United, has more information on this developing story.

EDIT2: Melbourne fans are not at all happy about this.

  2. So is a 'guest' player the same as one on loan? He is going back to DCU after this?
