OUTGOING: Landon Donovan to Bayern Munich On Loan (DONE DEAL)

Posted by MLSR Thursday, November 20, 2008

If you have been following the video series we have present here you'd know by now that Bayern boss, Jurgen Klinsmann is high on Landon Donovan's talents. Now it appears that Landon Donovan is a Bayern player, at least temporarily.

According to ESPN Soccernet:

>

Bayern Munich are set to sign USA international Landon Donovan on a loan deal running from Jan 1 to at least the middle of March and possibly until the end of the season.

Donovan, 26, who has made over a century of caps for his country, has been training with Bayern for the last week and a half and has impressed Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann.

"The goal will be to see if we can get him long term, at least until the end of the season," Klinsmann told the Bayern's website.

This week Klinsmann, who was a technical advisor at Galaxy before he took over as Bayern coach on July 1, paid tribute to the midfielder's ability, saying: "Landon is a player who bring all sorts of qualities, he has developed into one of the top players in North America and Mexico."

Having struggled to impress on his last sojourn to the Bundesliga when he had a brief spell at Bayer Leverkusen, Donovan said he is enjoying his time in Munich and is keen to stay.

"As a person and a player, I am completely different now to how I was then, I have matured. I am ready. I believe I can keep up with all the other players, even if I am not the best player here."

Having struggled to make the grade in Germany last time, Donovan admits he has learned from the experience. "I recognise Leverkusen wasn't the problem, I was," he said. "I just wasn't ready for it."

And Bayern manager Uli Hoeness has been impressed with what he has seen so far. "What he has shown so far is okay, he can certainly kick," said Hoeness.

More here after the jump.

So, a little sidebar here....

Currently 4 MLS players are now out on loan, Landon Donovan to Bayern Munich, David Beckham to AC Milan, Fred to Wellington FC Phoenix, and Cuauhtemoc Blanco to Santo Laguana. Do you think this is a good deal for the players? What about for the MLS clubs involved, LA Galaxy, DC United, and Chicago Fire respectively?

How exactly is that being complimentary?? He seems skeptical if anything

  4. If Galaxy let him stay for the rest of the European season, would they be able to fill his roster spot while he is gone or do players away on loan count against their roster and salary cap?

  10. Is this a sign that the Galaxy are figuring it out?

Loan Donno and make money to buy players to play with becks when he comes back.

  12. I think this should be a more common thing for players in the MLS. It will help raise their salaries with out having to worry about raising their respective MLS teams salary caps. As well as playing a more normal soccer calender in a competitive atmosphere that is different from the US.

I think you will see more follow in this trend until the MLS sorts out it's calender issues...

  14. It's good for the league. It enhances the images of the league by letting our best play in other countries. Good for the players because they can keep in shape and prove themselves in different leagues.

Hopefully, we can bring all these guys back because they are big fan pleasers.
