INCOMING: Frank Rijkaard to Coach in MLS?

Posted by MLSR Saturday, November 8, 2008

Lose one former great Dutch footballer turned football manager, gain another?

Today rumors have surfaced on our friends site, MLSenEspanol that the Dutch great has received an offer from MLS according to Spanish language site MundoDeportivo.

Hey guys,

Just posted an article in my blog about the possibility of Frank Rijkaard (former FC Barcelona head coach) coming to the MLS. Although he has plenty of offers in Europe, according to the site, the MLS offered him a job either a general manager or head coach.

The thing is, he travels a lot to America because his son goes to school here, so maybe...

More here en Español....

What would you think of Rijkaard coaching in MLS?

  2. While he definitely is a better coach then Ruud Gullit, I sincerely hope he doesn't come to MLS, especially to the Sounders. The Sounders should hire someone with tons of MLS experience...Paul Mariner, etc.

  18. Back to topic, I'd love to see him at Chivas. I think he'd be a perfect fit.

  19. The article says that Rikjaard has been contacted by several teams. Which ones? Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if the Galaxy were one of them, even with Arena as coach and GM. First, that's the way the Galaxy operates; subvert the head coach if he's not "producing." Second, hiring a high-profile coach is the kind of thing that the Galaxy, which still has "world brand" ambitions, would do.

Maybe the Galaxy already thinks Arena will bolt after 2009 to Philadelphia; Rikjaard would be perfect for their goals.

If Chivas USA signs Rikjaard, the Galaxy is toast.

Otherwise, he could wind up in New York. Right now, that would be a better, more realistic choice for the league.

  20. I don't see Chivas USA signing this guy, but i don't know how long Preky has until he gets the boot, or decided to move on.

  21. Until MLS salary cap becomes vaguely competetive with leagues aside from the LaLiga 1, Serie A, and Premiership, like the Championship or Bundesliga, it will be plenty tough to get top shelf coaches at the top of their game to come here.
    Kinda like with players.

I'm glad that MLS teams have the cajones to approach Rijkaard in the first place, even if it doesn't pan out. That alone says something about the leagues development.
