INCOMING: Alessandro del Piero to Red Bull New York?

Posted by MLSR Sunday, November 9, 2008

If Toronto want this guy then they better get crackin' fast as another MLS club's name has recently been linked to him. According to this article on Tribalfootball, Alessandro Del Piero could be headed to Giant's Stadium/Red Bull Park.

Here is an excerpt:

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero is being lined up for a move to New York Red Bulls.

MLS chiefs see Del Piero as the ideal name to energise the soccer market in New York and are monitoring his situation closely.

The Juve captain has made no secret of his desire to test himself abroad before he retires and his entourage have already had positive contact with FIFA officials about the strength of American soccer.

Del Piero has been in stunning form this season, which will only strengthen his marketing power in the 'States.

  4. ummmm, no way in hell. Im a rbny fan, but del piero is too good to come to the US and juve is doing fine. Maybe in two or three years. The fact that hes been in "stunning form" this year, doesnt really increase his marketability as much as decrease the probability of him coming. Even then, it would be AMAZING if he came to RBNY, though Henry would be even better

  6. well there are talks going on between MLS official on whether to give MLS clubs another DP slot. So RBNY can have angel, henry and del piero all at the same time. Talk about a great set of forwards. I can see a 4-3-3.....a line up only a fantasy roster can have haha

  8. Invest the money into a young star - instead of injury prone oldies

  10. he saidhe'll play at juve until he's 40.

    not. gonna. happen.

  11. Not gonna happen because:
    A) Del Piero's still lovin' life at Juve
    &
    B) MLS isn't just handing-out additional DP slots

  15. yeah New York traded for an extra DP slot, and they is a good chance that a second DP slot will be added during the owners meeting during MLS Cup.

  17. Also I bet that Del Piero wants to leave Juve on stunning form rather than wait until he is relegated to the bench. Del Piero isn't getting any younger he is 34. Saying that New York gets the advantage over TFC. New York is well New York, and new york is going to be playing in grass.

  19. I've heard that del Piero wants to play for TFC because Toronto has the world's longest street. I'm serious.

  20. 5 players that could be good or the MLS (actually, that I would like to see coming next year!):

    1. Henry
    2. Palermo
