EXPANSION: Montreal Monday Morning Press Conference Scheduled

Posted by MLSR Sunday, November 23, 2008

According to the CBC there is a Monday morning press conference scheduled by Montreal Impact owner, Joey Saputo to address the issue of their bid withdrawl, or bid rejection depending on who you believe.

Here is an excerpt:

The Montreal bid was tabled by Joey Saputo, owner of the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer League's First Division, and George Gillett, owner of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and part-owner of Liverpool of the English Premier League.

The group said in a statement late Saturday that it was the league, not them, that withdrew the bid. Saputo is scheduled to meet with the media on Monday morning to further address the issue.

Garber had said Montreal's delegation informed him within the past week of possible trouble.

"Montreal has had to evaluate what kinds of private capital they needed to refinance their stadium, to fund the expansion fee, and what kind of public support would be available," the commissioner said.

"I'm not sure they were able to come to terms in this economic environment."

  6. Don Garber is badass. I bet they told MLS as part of their bid that they would only pay like half or less than that of the expansion fee, and then Garber decided, without telling Montreal, to annouce that they had "withdrew" their bid.

  8. I hope there are no burned bridges. Montreal would be a great market for MLS.

  9. Not so much, itll be more like

  14. Funny first post.

But Saputo is Italian by heritage. Though he speaks English/French cause of where he's from, he's Italian first and foremost.

  16. Saputo seems so clean cut and friendly that I have a hard time picturing the billionaire cheese baron as mob boss. Although from what I hear there is definitely mob connections with his father.

You don't know about Garber? He rolls deep man. They don't call him "The Don" for nothing. Plus he holds it down for the east side.
