REPORT: Philadelphia Expansion Group in Financial Peril?

Posted by MLSR Sunday, October 26, 2008

This Vancouver Sun report will come as no surprise to hardcore readers of MLSR but it likely will wake up some of those who discounted our 6 day old rumor of a "Montreal Contingency" in the event that the Philadelphia group is unable to fulfill their obligations:

END ZONE: Vancouver Whitecaps' chances of landing a Major League Soccer franchise in 2011 just might have gotten better with the rumble out of MLS headquarters in New York Friday that Philadelphia's 2010 franchise entry could be in economic jeopardy. Montreal could jump in a year early, lessening Vancouver's 2011 competition.

People discounted the rumor posted here after a carefully planned PR move by the Philadelphia front office showing before and after pictures of the stadium site and with just enough spin so as to tell an astute observer that there might be more to the story.

And like our rumor the story above refers to an unnamed source which we suspect may come from a bit higher in the MLS pecking order than the P.R staff of Nick Sakiewicz

Just as with the Beckham to AC Milan rumor, one of MLSR's sources has provided you with the story before the story broke in the mainstream press.

What's the old adage? "Believe only some of that you read and only half of what you're told."

  2. I honestly think the Vancouver Sun just wrote that based on the rumour reported here. Not saying it's not true cuz the owners are obviously in the financial $hitter but I'm not prepared to take this as the mainstream media being informed

  4. At the rate you're going, you're going to have to take some time off to recover from dislocating your shoulder patting yourselves on the back.

I know man, we are so sore, we prefer the days when we were wrong about nearly everything.

  12. I hope you're right, MLSR. I have nothing against Philly, but, ya know, I wouldn't mind having my Impact in MLS.

Well..no. They have to have the stadium built by 2010 so they need to get sorted out immediately.

  16. Just for the record. We hope we're wrong on this one. Philadelphia deserves a team perhaps more than anyone. Their fans have been through it all and have had their hopes dashed twice already. Third time's a charm right? We hope so. It would send a bad signal if MLS had to go to their emergency Plan B.

  18. Perhaps you should change the RUMORS on the masthead to 128 pt font.

Time will show how much tripe this is...

  20. I'm actually happy about the eventual collapse of the SOB's.

They are annoying and condescending. Hopefully iStar collapses and they are all but just a memory. Some will return to supporting the RB's and the others back to DC.

    Cheers.

  22. The SOB's deserve a club, but so di the Impact's Ultras. Whay make Montreal wait. Let them both in for 2010 (if Philly has their finances in order)!

  24. montreal should be in 2009 with Seattle, especially if they win the concacaf champions league

  26. Well, both feet in the financial grubber would mean the Phili franchise has more in common with European teams than MLS teams. I think ...

  28. How is it that Vancouver's investors are somehow immune to this financial meltdown? I am Canadian and don't want Vancouver in. While I do like seeing Montreal in the league, I don't think the Champion's League result will mean anything at all. It comes down to stadium and suitability of the franchise in the league.
