John Carver, never one to mince words has thrown down the gauntlet. According to this article on the CBC website, the Toronto FC boss will leave the club if it doesn't open up the wallet. Here is an excerpt:

John Carver hasn't hidden the fact that he thinks Toronto FC needs to sign a star "designated player" in order to be competitive in Major League Soccer.

Earlier this week, the head coach once again staked his future with Toronto FC on the club's ability to add a designated player to the roster in time for the 2009 MLS season.

"I've gone on record and I'll say it again, because no matter what happens, at the end of the season, if I'm going to be here at this club, we have to do something about it. We have to bring in that quality-type of player," said Carver, who is on a one-year contract with a club option for the 2009 season.

Added the Englishman: "The club is aware of it, the management is aware of it, the fans are certainly aware of it, and we have to do it, because if we don't, I will definitely, definitely go home. No buts about it."

More after the jump.

  2. Brilliant

M.L.S.E. has never had someone within their organization (that I can recall) call their bluff in such a manner as this. John is telling them "listen, you've got the team. 2 years of sub-par footie is ENOUGH. Open up those purse strings that are as tight as a whales blow-hole and start showing the fans why their paying 10-20% more to renew their seats for next season"

Even if he left tomorrow, John Carver would continue to be a well love figure in Canadian football.

    Cheers John.... we're behind you!

  4. Uh, let him go. Clearly he a is terrible coach GM whatever. The top 3 teams in the league dont have a DP. This guy is nuts.

  8. I don't buy it. The man is a terrible coach tactically and as much as I want a DP, at this point it wouldn't be the answer. a lot more has to be done to improve then just a DP.

  10. Of the top 8 teams that would make the playoffs today, only 3 have DP's (Columbus, New York, and Chicago) while 5 do not (New England, Houston, RSL, Chivas, Colorado).

It is the sign of a weak GM and manager who have been given exceptions on international players, and almost every other kind of break the league can give them (almost as bad as the Galaxy) and they have gotten worse since last season.

Who does he want? He pulled in a bunch of players from Europe and has run just as many out of town. You have to build a team, the vast rebuild of RSL last season without a DP is a example of what can be done. Build a solid team like Houston and success will follow

  12. Maybe he can take Gallardo off of D.C.'s hands.

    DP = better team performance?

Columbus, Houston, New England, Chivas - No DP

    Galaxy, D.C. - have DP

Perhaps he should look at other winning coaches instead of the United Nations for advice on how to build a team.

  13. MLSE is notoriously cheap. In this case, they have to reward the fans by bringing-in some real talent. Look at the effect Schelotto has had on the Crew.
True, a DP won't a championship team make, but it would give the loyal supporters something else to get excited about.
And Houston "sort of" has a DP. De-Ro was grandfathered in.

  14. Upon further review...both Schelotto and De Ro make just UNDER dp money. Quite the bargains. So, in reality, Carver needs to concentrate on the team at hand, realistically.
Maybe Mo should just choose better players, who don't mind playing on turf. Or maybe just ditch the turf.

  15. People keep forgetting Chicago too, theyve got a DP.
Fact is a DP couldnt hurt in any position on the field. Carver has declined on two offers and would like to stay however this does allow for him to leave TFC looking like the good guy. Noones expecting a DP to carry us to the finals, thats unrealistic, it certainly might make us more competive then we currently are.

Anonymous #2, you obviously dont even know what the guy does so why should we even care about your opinion on the man

Still not buying MLSE as cheap, theyve purchase a computer system that noone else in the league has (alot top teams in EPL have it), they bought a top conditioning coach, our coach is one of the highest paid. They do need to step up the game on bringing us grass. This is a different conversation all together. Leave your boring leafs predjudices at home.

  19. Correction to the last person...

Montreal never beat TFC in qualifying. TFC won the first encounter, and they drew the second.
