OUTGOING: DC United Breaks Away from Pack

Posted by Rumor Mill Monday, October 6, 2008

Not in the season, and possibly not in the playoffs but DC United is breaking its website off from the MLSNet.com web template in a move that reflects a baby step away from single-entity as well as the growing stature of a club which secured the 3nd largest sponsorship in MLS history. If you like our friends at BehindTheBadge.com then you'll love the new site aas rumor has it some of them will be working on it. The recent job offer posted on DC United's website hinted that big changes were afoot. They are.

As reported in Sports Business Journal...

D.C. United will join two other MLS teams in breaking ranks from the league’s digital platform in favor of developing and maintaining its own, independent Web site.
The move, which is awaiting board and commissioner approval, highlights a growing impatience among MLS teams as the league continues to develop a digital strategy for the future.
MLS began reviewing its digital strategy when its agreement with MLB Advanced Media lapsed close to two years ago. MLBAM’s subsidiary, Sports on Earth, currently manages the MLS site and 12 team sites as part of a deal renewed earlier this year. The league has looked at partnering with other groups like Turner Sports in the past but has never signed a new partnership or outlined a comprehensive digital strategy. That delay tested United’s resolve.

  6. YEah it's such a giant step away from single entity that both New England and Colorado have had their own sites for a few years now...

  8. Seattle will take the same route as well. Both they and New England have pretty solid infrastrucures with the NFL assets already in place. Philly will most likely go that route as well. Both Philly and Seattle are currently running their own sites although the teams aren't here yet.

  12. Yep! Cookie cutter for sale. There were some real neat websites waaay back before MLS started its bullshit. Fire's springs to mind. Now it looks like its been put together by a 12-year old on meth.

  14. ^ ahaha

I have to wonder if the MLS front office consists of a group of around 20 people.

It takes so long for them to get anything done it's incredibly stupid.
