Arthur Blank may be getting ready to add a Major League Soccer franchise to his pro sports holdings.
Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, is trying to decide whether to apply for an expansion franchise that would begin play in 2011. Applications are due by Oct. 15.
The league, which will have 16 teams playing by 2010, intends to expand to 20 in the next five years and will add two teams in 2011 from a pool of applicants that could include Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami, Portland, St. Louis, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and New York.
“We have had discussions with Arthur Blank and his staff recently and those discussions are positive,” said MLS Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs Dan Courtemanche.
What do you think? Does the MLS really need a club in the South? Would an Atlanta club be the best choice for that and make a good addition to MLS?
Perhaps Blank can team with the Atlanta Silverbacks and help them complete the stadium below:

That stadium is terrible!! The turf is only the starting point...They definitely need more money to fix it up. Don't let the video fool you either, that was from last year. This year their crowds were horrible. I understand the desire of MLS to tap into the media market in Atlanta, but the franchise will NOT do well there. Pro sports are NOT supported in Atlanta, just ask the Falcons, Braves, Hawks, or Thrashers...
NO way in HELL should MLS be in Atlanta or any part of the south. Soccer's home is in the Northeast and west coast. Anywhere else just does not get it or feel the passion. Houston only works cause of so many latinos adopted the team but look at Dallas, and look at Colorado, that's what Atlanta would be.
Dallas would have worked if the stadium was actually IN Dallas. Colorado would be better likewise. But yeah, I vote no for Atlanta
Well, that's what you get when Salvador Dali is a principal investor. It doesn't surprise me one bit!
I agree with the critisim of pro sports in the South, none of the cities consistently support anything besides football and NASCAR. On the other hand Aurthur Blank would make a great owner.
Yeah! Atlanta! Sucks!
Come on, who in the world thinks that this is a good location for an MLS franchise? Maybe they'll even be called the Silverbacks.
I say Atl. and Ottawa. get in and completely ruin any growth of the league.
I say bring in Atlanta...as the 23rd or 24th franchise.
The size of the media market can't be ignored forever.
