REPORT: Worst MLS Club Name Ever?!

Posted by MLSR Tuesday, September 9, 2008

For many years, many MLS fans have bemoaned the name of one club or another but what we have discovered makes, in our opinion, all current, and former MLS club names pale in comparison in terms of poor quality. This happened today while conducting a deep investigation into Philadelphia MLS club names that are or have been bandied about. You can thank someone at MLS Headquarters for the idea and our crack MLSR tech staff for uncovering just how bad, bad names can get.

Thanks to domain registration records, we give you......

It no doubt was to be used for the Philadelphia club which in 2006 had been planed to be based in South Jersey of all places on the campus of Rowan University.

Just as that plan is in the dustbin of MLS History so, is this name.......we think.......WE HOPE! The fact that it has been held on to and renewed in January of this year is just a little.....unsettling.

Our view: Thank goodness that plan never went forward and instead Philadelphia will play in a classy stadium with a potentially classy name like Athletic.

  6. i wouldn't go too nuts over this, MLS just like any organization that registers domains regularly, they probably have an auto-renewal for all domains, even the ones that won't be used or ever have anything on them.

and by the way I would know this because I do it for a minor league here in the States (not soccer though)...for some reason they don't mind wasting 100 to 200 bucks a year on wasted domains...

  7. Actually, I still find "Miami Fusion" more grating to the ears.
    Surprisingly.

  8. Woah...can't believe I forgot about "Dallas Burn". Yikes.

  17. WORST...NAME...EVER!

Philly Athletic would be perfect. I hope that the MLB gives approval. And yes, it is the same, so they'll need approval. The reason they want that name is because it sounds like a football club, and it's got a history in Philly sports.

  18. The name was going to be Penn-Jersey or Philadelphia Independence. Both names were registered at the same time.

MLS has a history of this. Anyone remember the Chicago Rythym, The Washington Revolution, or The Voyagers?

  20. Why not just Independence FC?

  22. I just think that the name "Independance" sounds like a WNBA-style nickname.
