REPORT: Red Bulls make a splash during transfer period

Posted by MLS Rumors Tuesday, September 16, 2008

After years of frustrations Red Bulls fans have something to look forward too. The club has addressed all its apparent weaknesses since the start of the season. In all 9 players have been signed since the start of the season. At times it looked as if the reinforcements would never arrive, but Juan Carlos Osorio and Jeff Agoos have searched far and wide for players to help this New York club become a serious contender for this season and beyond. The first acquisition was Andrew Boyens, a New Zealand International and former Toronto FC defender, who at times has looked shaky but has consistently improved througout the season to be considered a reliable option in the New York backline. The next four signings had to wait until the MLS summer transfer window opened up. Argentine defensive midfielder Juan Martin Pietravallo arrived from Veria FC in the Greek Super League, and has helped anchor the clubs midfield showing a combination of tenacity and skill. Venezuelan International Jorge Rojas arrived from Atl. Maracaibo in Venezuela and has helped jumpstart the New York attack. Venezuelan defender Gabriel Cichero arrived on loan from Deportivo Italia and has given New York a physical presence in the center of the defence. Less heralded Mexican defender Diego Jimenez arrived from Tecos in Mexico and has played well in his three starts with the club.

The last four players to arrive were signed prior to the September 15 roster freeze date. Senegalese striker Macoumba Kandji from Atlanta in the USL is expected to challenge for a starting spot up front with Juan Pablo Angel. His combination of speed and skill could provide to be a handful for MLS defenders. Cameroon Under-23 International Matthew Mbuta was purchased from USL-2 side Crystal Palace Baltimore. Mbuta should provide depth for the club on the flanks or as an attacking midfielder. Two players were signed with a look towards the future, Gambian Under-20 striker Sainey Touray is an 18 year old attacker that the club is looking to develop, having shown great promise as he led his club team Wallidan FC to the Gambian League title. Goalkeeper Terry Boss was acquired from USL-2 side Charlotte Eagles. With Charlotte he was recognized as the top keeper in USL-2 and will be evaluated by New York to determine if he is a viable option as the number two keeper.
