INCOMING (?): Toronto FC looking for a Canadian DP next season

Posted by MLS Rumors Thursday, September 18, 2008

According to CBC News (click here for the full and original article), Mo Johnston at TFC was in South America looking at four young players (age 19-21). However, he stated the DP would not be South American and not in their twilight (age 33 or 34). He is looking for one from Canada.

Begin the guessing now...

Dwayne De Rosario (age 30): Popular MLS attacking midfielder but would Houston let him go?

Julian De Guzman (age 27): Excellent Defensive Midfielder that would shore up the back line, but would he leave La Liga?

Atiba Hutchinson (age 25): Supporting striker and midfielder and in February 2007, Hutchinson was named CanadaSoccer.com Fan’s Choice winner. So he would be popular with the awesome fan base.

Paul Stalteri (Age 30): Tottenham Hotspur defender would help shore up some defense.

...who else might make sense?

  2. This is gonna be a high profile attempt at getting DeRo. It's been planned for some time.

  3. I really think it's only a matter of time before Stalteri shows-up.
Don't see him coming-in as a dp, though...maybe in a couple of years.
Love to see DeGuzman, or DeRo, for that matter.

  8. Michael Klukowski from Brugge? Good player but he's not DP material. That's like saying your designated player is going to be Frankie Hejduk.

It would be nice if we could get those guys, but the list of Canadian targets is too short. DeGuzman, Friend, Hutchinson are too young to want to leave. Radzinski, Stalteri, and Dero are not worth DP money at this point.

  12. The only one worth DP money is DeGuzman and while he plays a more defensive role at Depor, he's more than capable of putting them in the net as well. He's 27 and he's off contract at the end of the year. While Stalteri would be a great pick up, he's on record as hating the turf plus spending DP money on a defender isn't too bright.

  18. I think he is full of it, but would one consider Owen Hargreaves Canadian in this instance?

Not that it would even be possible for another 5 years or so.
