Courtesy of this article Bloomberg.com we get a bit of an update on the Fred Wilpon, New York Mets, MLS negotiations. Here is an excerpt:
Sept. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The New York Mets are looking into purchasing a Major League Soccer club after completing construction of Citi Field, the new $600 million home the baseball team will move into for the 2009 season, said David Howard, the club's executive vice president for business.
Howard said an MLS team likely would play in a different venue that would give the team a chance to host other events as well.
``We're not resting,'' Howard said in an interview with Bloomberg Radio's ``On the Ball'' program, airing Sept. 13. ``Before even Citi Field is completed, we're looking to see what might be next for us. There's a lot of opportunity and potential.''
The Mets, currently atop the standings in the National League East division, are the second-most-valuable team in baseball behind the New York Yankees, according to Forbes magazine. With Citi Field on the horizon and their regional sports network, SportsNet New York, in its third year of operation, the team's value rose 12 percent to $824 million in the magazine's most recent rankings.
``Our vision is not to be just a successful baseball team, but to be a world-class sports and media entertainment company,'' Howard said. ``We're a lot closer to that goal than we were five years ago.''
Expansion Plans
Major League Soccer has 14 teams throughout the U.S. and Canada, and plans to expand to 18 by 2011. The Seattle Sounders will start play next season, with a yet-to-be named team in Philadelphia in 2010.
A team owned by the Mets could be one of those 2011 teams, Dan Courtemanche, MLS's senior vice president for communications and marketing, said in a telephone interview.
New York Rivals
The league would welcome another New York team, Courtemanche said.
``We've had preliminary discussions,'' he said. ``A second team in New York would provide a true local rivalry for the Red Bulls and increase the overall popularity of the league in the area and nationally.''
And there was much moaning and groaning in some quarters of BigSoccer, and there was rejoicing amongst the Borough Boys.
As you as a frequent MLSR reader know, we wholly endorse and support the idea of a team based in New York City itself and have solid reasons why.

NY don't deserve another team until their first one draws more than flies.
Yeah, NY doesn't support the one team they do have, what in the world makes them think another one would be a good idea?
the fact that we are the largest untapped market in the US, with 18 million people in the metro area...that's more than most cities that have teams combined. Trust me..if we get a team in queens, we will be the best support team in MLS, hands down. And what you think we "deserve" doesn't matter...its up to rich owners like Wilpon to decide if he wants to spend this much money on a franchise, he's a smart man, and if he thinks he's not wasting his money, he must know something you don't. Get used it!
Een Draght Macht Maght...
up the Borough Boys!
"Yeah, NY doesn't support the one team they do have, what in the world makes them think another one would be a good idea?"
This is so true...I'm sure a team in the city would draw better than Red-Bull, MLS has to realize though that as soon as NYC gets a team Red Bull is done. A team 20 minutes away from the city and 8 dollars in subway fees is not going to be able to compete with a REAL NYC team and all the "glitz" and "glamour" that come with it. MLS should have told AEG before they even started on Harrison that they need to look in NYC or at least on that side of the river before going to N/J. The sad thing is that Red Bull probably has the money and desire to build in NYC but because AEG jumped all over beautiful Harrsion, that dream is over.
yeah, as long as the team is in New York, it would be cool. It would draw a lot of people.
Where are they building the new Red Bull stadium, Red Bull Arena? Is that in the city?
The New Jersey Red Bulls play in Harrison, NJ.
I'm sick of this argument, New York is fucking huge and can handle two teams in the area. It's good for the league.
It's looking more and more like NY2 will be happening sooner than later.
To those who don't believe New York "deserves" a team because the team the city has (Red Bull) is so poorly supported, I offer the following for your consideration: I believe the poor support for the Red Bulls is the primary reason the league wants to add a second team to the New York City area. The league would have a much better job selling itself to potential advertisers if it can show that it has a viable, and thriving, presence in New York. I don't think they can make that claim currently.
That's just my two cents, anyhow.
Thanks Wilpon !!! We deserve a TRUE soccer team in Queens by 2011 !!!
BOROUGH BOYS NYC
New Yorkers are a great people and they deserve a great team. I just saw this on ESPN. Kudos to MLSR for being way ahead of the mainstream media and other blogs on this story. They been with us from the beginning. BOROUGH BOYS!
how about they support the team they already have.... i wish it took me only 20 minutes and 8 dollars.
20-minutes and $8 really makes you guys sound lazy and cheap! That statement has me looking at NYC in another way. I used to support the idea; now not so much. I mean, I have to drive two-and-a-half hours to get to TFC games! I know people who do it routinely. $8? 20-minutes? Seriously.
Love the haters. If there is one thing you learn being a new york sports fan, love the haters. Keep it coming people, i eat this shit up. Tell me how lazy i am and how much i'm not a true fan and dont deserve a team, but more importantly, when you visit NYC in the next couple of years(hopefully by 2011) stop by and watch NYCFC dominate. I'll buy you a drink to dry your eyes.
You eat shit?
