Dear rumor mill,
I just heard from someone that is associated with the Miami connection of F.C Barcelona's, and they are so serous about buying an MLS franchise that there has been talks with the people at FIU to use their brand new 18,000 seat stadium so that they can start play in 2011.
Don't know yet if this is a temporary solution, while the proposed soccer stadium at the old orange bowl site is built.

It seems that the MLS expansion committee has their work cut out for them this winter. I have no favorites as far as expansion goes. I just want to make sure the quality of play progressively improves.
Stadium first!! FIU's stadium would be a fucking joke. The league should be above this shit by now?
That's why I say Montreal makes a whole ass load of sense.
That's not the right stadium picture. This is the new FIU stadium the e-mailer is talking about:

Pros
walk up excitement
easy fan interaction with players
Cons
No luxury boxes to speak of
easy fan interaction with players (no tunnel to protect them leaving the field)
Make it Happen we are ready to support MLS.
fuck that.
If they get a franchise in another football stadium not owned by the club when you have PGE Park in Portland and Saputo Stadium in Montreal damn near ready for MLS AND established supporters groups AND big money ownership groups I'm goin to flip.
First, that rebranding crap looks second rate. We need to develop our own franchises, and actively pursue cities that are sure to provide atmosphere.
Portland, check. Montreal, check.
Miami?
BIG iff, they've had issues with the Heat's attendence in their championship season. Hell no to Miami before cities sure to offer the total package, INCLUDING SSS!!!
Let's see. A team in another country with a bare bones field makes more sense than a team in Miami. Beautiful.
Fan in Miami want Barca/Miami 2011!!
Vamos Barca/Miami 2011
The Miami Ultras are ready to support
Barca/Miami 2011 Make happen!!!
Yes,Yes,Yes to Barca/Miami
A team in another country in a city with a population of 3-5 million, with a SSS stadium in a downtown location that pulls is 15,000 a game, with plans to expand their own stadium. Miami has a somewhat vague plan with foreign investment. Montreal dosen't need a plan its all right there. Strong market, SSS in a good lacation, local investors.
its temporary, the new sss will open in 2013 next to the marlin stadium. the deadline was last june to have a deal in place for the new sss to open in 2011, now they cannot start building the sss at the orange bowl until they are done building the marlins stadium.
the new fiu stadium opened literally YESTERDAY against usf. it would be the best temporary solution in the mls.
frankly, im now certain that miami will be one of the next cities to get a team. good, its weird not having a soccer team in the most latin market in the us. the mls needs miami (also needs montreal, st. louis, nyc2, and portland)
A soccer stadium at the OB is still has a chance to to be built for 2011.
The delay of the Marlins stadium has help the soccer stadium. If Barca bid for 2011 we will have a soccer stadium ready for in 2011. It is possible that Barca don't want to wait until 2011 and go in with Philadelphia.
Yes to Barca/Miami we are ready!
Oh Great, a stadium with football lines.. that's what we need, more of this nonsense.
If they get a franchise in another football stadium not owned by the club when you have PGE Park in Portland
Which is a baseball stadium...
This would be terrible.
Since St. Louis is looking more and more like it's slipping from the picture, I'm throwing my support behind Montreal and Portland.
As for NY2, I say wait until Red Bull Park opens and see what the response is to that.
And Miami? Uh-huh...umm, no.
FUCK That!
The Portland Timbers have a soccer specific stadium already. They also have financial backing and fan support!
Go Timbers FC 2011
As a non partisan in this debate I have always favored returning to Miami as the Fusion failed more due to internal managment factors and MLS' lack of patience with the marketplace than anything else. The Fusion had actually begun to really turn the corner on attendance the year they were shut down. However, playing in a College Football stadium with astroturf is a no go for me. If they are going to play there, I no longer support Miami. Lockhart Stadium is just fine for MLS.
An SSS needs to be a must for potential expansion!
No SSS, no team!
No more "pandering" If it's Barca Miami as the name then I will personally attack each and every player on that lame excuse of a team...If Barca feels like owning a team and calling them Miami FC and they dont stink it up at the gate like all the other teams in Florida do then go for it..FIU's stadium is a bad idea btw.
im all for it as long as its not called barca miami. thats like putting a baseball team in spain called the barcelona new york yankees. if they acually do name them barca miami, a team equal to the real barca would have to be fielded to avoid ridicule. - impossible!
i can hear it on sports center now. barcelona miami? seriously don't give the haters more ammo.
barca miami = shameless self promotion
"Which is a baseball stadium..."
Got news for you, PGE Park's design is better suited for soccer, also there are plans to move out the baseball team and add sideline seats to the other side of PGE Park if Portland gets an MLS team.
The Miami Fusion definitely turned the corner their final season and actually had decent attendance...
But I'm guessing many people don't realize a glaring problem with the "Miami" Fusion... They played at Lockhart Stadium... in FORT LAUDERDALE.
Ft. Lauderdale is a good 45 minutes-1 hour away from Miami. My father and I were one of the big soccer fans from Miami who would make the trip up to Lockhart for most home games, but it was a pain in the ass going that far.
An MLS franchise that is actually in Miami would definitely be a success.
There's nothing vague about the fact that Miami is in the United States of America and Montreal is in Canada.
Yes, Miami is in the USA
Yes, Montreal is in Canada
...What's your point?
Vamos Barca/Miami 2011
I disagree with the above post. The core of soccer fans left over from the NASL/APSL/USL/ASL days were from Fort Lauderdale north. Putting a team in Miami unless its at FIU which is served well by the Turnpike and Palmetto would mean these fans would automatically tune out the team. Do you think people from Broward and Palm Beach go to South Dade for USL games? It's less about USL and more about the awful drive to Tropical Park.
The attendance at Lockhart was outstanding in the NASL days and finally was picking up at the end of the Fusion. I agree with the above poster who states playing at Lockhart is a better idea.
Fans in Miami want to see Boca Juniors or Real Madrid anyhow. Those "soccer snobs" will NEVER take to MLS.
I dont care were Barca/Miami plays I will go Miami or FT Lauderdale see the game. Just bring Miami MLS.
My point is that MLS is an American league. Just ask the USSF. Toronto needed USSF permission to play in MLS. And the USSF ruling (an example of conflict of interest and corruption, anyway) was limited to Toronto. In other words, Canadian expansion can only proceed with rulings from the USSF; each city will require a separate vote. So, if the US-Canada marriage is so inevitable and natural and mutually beneficial and self-evident, why is a special ruling from the American (AND Canadian) governing bodies required? Screw Montreal and Vancouver. Let them form the nucleus of their own damned league so Americans can patiently grow the sport in their own country just like everyone else.
Ah, nothing like good fashioned, top-flight jingoism. Especially when it's coming from an 'anon.'
Do you know what jingoism means? I didn't think so. Of course, that doesn't surprise me. You clowns are so quick to condemn that you never choose the proper words.
VERY GOOD I HOPE MIAMI GETS A MLS TEAM.
MLS is not concerned with being strictly American...they are concerned with making money.
...and what about Cardiff City? They play in the Coca-Cola Championship. There are other Welsh clubs playing in the English system, and Whales has a league of their own!
...and what about AS Monaco FC?
They play in the French Lige 1.
...and what about the Wellington Phoenix? A Kiwi club in Oz's A-League.
YES PLEASE BRING MLS TO MIAMI.
I'm interested to know what you think about a SSS right next to a baseball stadium? Both seasons would run at the same time. Wouldn't the two teams be splitting the same market? Who do you think would win that battle?
Make it happen Barcelona.
St. Louis is slipping? Don't know where you're getting your info, pal.
They've got:
1.)A VERY aggressive owner, Jeff Cooper.
2.)A pre-approved stadium deal.
3.)One of America's most solid soccer communities.
Don't believe me? Check the future MLS team's site.
http://www.stlouissoccerunited.com/
Fans in Miami want MLS. Make it happen Barcelona.
Jeff Cooper is a committed owner, who has admitted that he does have $50million for the expansion fee.
Griping and grumbling about the fee of expansion makes people believe that your chances are slipping. The other potential expansion owners are gladly willing to pay.
Yes bring them on i will buy 4 season tickets.
