EXPANSION: St Louis Looks ABroad for Big Money Investor

Posted by MLSR Sunday, August 3, 2008

It looks like Jeff Cooper and St. Louis United are headed to the birthplace of football to scare up some £££'s for the St Louis expansion bid.

According to this article:

Jeff Cooper's effort to bring Major League Soccer to St. Louis took him this week to London, where he met with several interested parties who are involved in pro soccer in the UK. ... Former MICDS baseball standout Matt Kramer, a catcher, was recently signed by the Atlanta Braves. He was assigned to their Class A affiliate (Rome) in the South Atlantic League. The Harvard grad had been playing for the Harlingen (Tex.) franchise in the United Baseball League. The GM at Harligen is St. Louisan Dave Kost, who coached Kramer on Brentwood's American Legion team.

  2. Just move Kansas City across the state. That way we don't take up an expansion slot.

  6. Come on a "Show Me State" Derby would be good for the league. Football in the midwest is also very lacking. Expand where ever you can find support and a stadium. For a stadium and a franchise at all you need $$ St. L just needs $$$ before anything.

  8. That's the best crest for an american soccer team ever. The question is what name would fit it perfectly.

  10. Or don't since they have a stadium on the way...

  12. your an idiot...KC's attendance percentage is higher than 90% of the league (four sellouts thus far)....The new owners are creating a buzz that is building to 2010 and the new stadium. A st.louis expansion team would only fuel the fire for soccer in KC.

For all the KChaters out there...it is not 1998 or even 2003....SHUTYOURPIEHOLES!!!!

  14. Moving KC doesn't even make any logistical sense. The owners have been committed to building a soccer franchise in KC, and they're about a month away from starting construction on their SSS, which is within KC city limits.

  16. Please don't let that KC stadium happen. It will be another huge mistake for the league keeping that team and their crappy attendance. I don't wanna hear "Wizards" ever again. Let's get the corniness out of the league.

This is funny. You should take this show on the road. I don't know how in the world you perceive KC as having the highest attendance percentage in the league, but it must be really good stuff you're smoking. And oh wow 4 sellouts thus far? Out of a 10,000 seat stadium?!?! Every game should be a sellout you idiot!! You guys suck. You root for a team named the frikkin Wizards! Get a life!

Thats because their stadium is really only for less than 11 thousand.

not bagging on KC i love that they're building a new stadium, but i think the idea of moving a team is not going to happen and is a horrible idea.

    PS: Bad-ass crest.

  22. Now thats a crest that will catch peoples attention. Maybe a good nickname like the Knights, or Monarchs. I hope St. Luis gets a team they have a SSS plan already. They might be as succesfull as Toronto.

  24. The stadium is getting built and there's nothing you people can do about it. Get over it.

In fact I'd actually consider putting money on it being finished before Red Bull Park.

No way. They would need their stadium put in downtown St. Louis to generate that kind of atmosphere. They're putting it in a Illinois suburb man. That's the only reason I don't want them in the league. Get the stadium in a better location (in St. Louis!) and then let them in the league.

  28. Robb Heineman can beat up your dad and your owners.

Greg Cotton can, will, and probably already has sexually harassed your mothers and sisters.

If you want to move a franchise, move Chivas, move Red Bulls New Jersey, or just move your fat arce off the couch---borrow a few bucks from your mom, come to KC and kiss my Wizard.

  30. Everyone get excited over the possibility of a Toronto-Montreal rivalry or Vancouver-Seattle. But when it comes the possibility of two Missouri / Midwestern cities having a soccer rivalry everyone is less enthused. I wish that those people would at least TRY to hide their elitism.

  32. Here's KC's average attendace:

    1996: 12,878
    1997: 9,058
    1998: 8,073
    1999: 8,183
    2000: 9,112
    2001: 10,954
    2002: 12,255
    2003: 15,573
    2004: 14,819
    2005: 9,691
    2006: 11,083
    2007: 11,586
    2008: 9,596

With the exception of 2003-04, this club's attendance numbers are horrible! No one can argue this team (and Columbus) is not movable! We have so many great owners in great soccer cities wanting in; why are we holding onto crap markets!? A St. Louis/KC derby will not save the Wiz. A STL/Chicago derby would probably be just as exciting for the people in STL.

I love the Hunt family for what they've for this sport in North America, but they should've never put their teams in KC, and Columbus!

  34. Even the 2003-04 numbers are only on par with teams like Columbus, Chivas, RSL and Colorado are getting! And some of those teams are talked about for movement!

BTW< Wikipedia will tell you the average attendances of nearly all of the MLS franchises.

  36. KC isn't moving they have a stadium plan in place, and have some of the most committed owners. They've sold out 3 of their last 4 homes games. As was stated above, the owners are using the smaller stadium to build a buzz when the new one comes around.

RBNY will not move either. Their stadium will become the crown jewel of MLS, the new stadium is closer to NYC and will be more accessible than Giants Stadium.

If any team should move it's Chivas. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a Galaxy fan. I'm saying it because they've sold slightly over 800 season tickets.

And as for which name fits the crest, it's said Cooper wants to name it St. Louis United.

  42. RBNY's "new stadium is closer to NYC." Really? Have you looked at a map? They might as well make it RB-New Jersey, and it's the very reason New Yorkers are pushing for a second team in the area, since the actual city of New York doesn't have a team, and the only way to get these people out to Jersey is if the Giants or Jets are playing.

  43. Anonymous Says:
  44. Red Bull Park is not neccessarily closer, but it is appearently more accessable by ransit from NYC.

  45. Anonymous Says:
  46. Why does it say "2009" on the crest. You guys know that St. Louis will not be playing in the league in '09, right?
