We at MLSR DO print any and all rumors (see top of the page). This one we do not attach a lot to due to the fact that we cannot seem to corroborate any of it other than some old news articles that stated Barcelona was interested in New York and Miami expansion a year or two ago.
This comes from the BigSoccer internet forum and was posted by a person known as Metro1026 who purports to have overheard a conversation between Barcelona and MLS officials at the recent friendly at Giant's Stadium. Like we said, we're dubious about this but since several of you have emailed us about it, we will reprint it here in hopes that it scares up some more information from other sources:
Tonight in a suite in Giants Stadium, officials from MLS and Barca met
to discuss Barca owning the Miami franchise of MLS. Barca officials were
overheard to declare their intention to own the franchise, using Barca colors. A name was not mentioned. The stadium will be one shared between Miami MLS and the Marlins.
MLS notified Barca officials that the three other clubs coming into the league would be St.Louis and two Canadian cities.

I've heard that Barça really wants to put a team in Cape Breton.
the plan is for miami to build a sss next to the new marlins stadium at the orange bowl, not for the teams to share a stadium. the mls knows this, this is common knowledge to anyone who knows about the marlins/sss stadium situation. therefore, i believe this guy who heard the conversation either misunderstood what he was hearing or is simply making the whole thing up.
I stopped reading right after this sentence:
"The stadium will be one shared between Miami MLS and the Marlins".
Great news for Miami. A soccer stadium will be built at the OB site.
I will call BS on this one for a simple fact, they can't award two teams to Canadian cities without redoing the CBA, since the number of national and international players is controlled in part by the MLS Players CBA, and there simply isn't enough talent in Canada.
This is why so many execptions have been issued to TFC, but I don't think the league could convince the other owners to give this same level of exception two more times right now.
St. Louis is a great city, but without a money man, or group, they city will never get a franchise. This is what held them back for the last two rounds of expansion, and nothing has changed.
I do think you could see a Miami team in the future, but I could more see it being the franchise that Beck's is eligible for at the end of his contract.
Just my opinion.

im all for Montreal, but WHY is vancouver there, and WHERE THE F IS PORTLAND.
I've heard Becks not Barca has first dibs on Miami. I even heard his reps have made political contacts down there to build their own stadium not share one with the Marlins.
So this is B/S. Miami's new Fusion or whatever they are called belongs to Becks when he retires to South Beach.
We want to see MLS come to Miami.
They're going to take the Canada thing too far and they'll have a world of aggravation on their hands.
Bring MLS to Miami already!
It's only a matter of time be it Becks, Barcelona, Miami FC/Traffic, just make it happen!

I just love the fact you put up a picture of a guy who doesn't play for Barca any longer, for your whole Barca Miami story.
If MLS is going to be USA and Canada, why not make USA and Canadian players non international players???
